This web page was designed in 1997 and is largly unaltered since then - thus no Home Page etc. Thought it was good to preserve the format. A new page at www.dalesholiday.com is easier to read but not as comprehensive!

RELAXING RETREAT The picturesque old Water Corn Mill is situated in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park (Herriot country), one mile from Aysgarth falls.

An early historical reference was made to the Mill in 1421. " Inquisition taken at Richmond, before John de Barton, Escheator,20 July,9 Hen.V (1421)" "A yearly rent of 34s issuing out of the mill of Burton in Bishopdall, held of the Earl of Westmoreland, by what service they do not know". The present structure may be a couple of hundred years younger than that.

The Mill was saved from ruin by the conversion into four flats.

.If you would like a Virtual Tour of the flat using a 360 degree view of the interior (with an exterior view of the Mill,Packhorse Bridge and Waterfall)please e-mail me (address at end of this page). The attachment is not large and will down load in a couple of minutes. It is very good - just like a video.

In autumn when the leaves have fallen, you can see in the distance Castle Bolton (Mary Queen of Scots stayed there overnight on her way to London to be beheaded). It is illuminated at night and appears to just hang in the Air.

Behind the Mill is a waterfall, which was sketched by Turner(it wasn't a very good sketch!). The sound of the water lulls you to sleep at night.

The Fox and Hounds public house is only 300 yards away where you can sample a pint of the infamous black sheep beer. If you enjoy a tipple there are several nice pubs in the local villages, try The George at Thoralby and the George and Dragon at Aysgarth.

West Burton itself is an attractive village; it is just off the main road and has a village green, stocks and a village shop. It boasts a pottery, which makes excellent figures of cats. West Burton was listed in the Doomsday Book (1086).

The Mill is a superb base for walking; a short walk around the top of the waterfall, through a couple of fields and over a stream back to the village gives you an appetite. If you walk a little further you will reach the ruins of an old Templer chapel. Nearby are the Aysgarth Falls and if you really fancy a good trek you could walk to Kettlewell.

Accommodation at the Top Flat consists of a Double bedroom(with double bed),Hall,Kitchen(with Cooker,Fridge and Microwave, toaster),Lounge(with TV,video,Radio/cassette/CD) and Bathroom (toilet, washbasin, shower over the bath).Night storage heater central heating. Sorry not suitable for pets.No smoking from Jan 2007. Car Parking is available at the Mill, and from here you can drive NORTH to Reeth and Richmond (watch out for tanks crossing the road over the moors because there is an army firing range there!!). If you travel SOUTH you will reach Buckden, Kettlewell and Grassington. To the WEST of the Mill is Askrigg, Hawes, Sedburgh and the Lake District. EAST are the towns of Leyburn, Northallerton, York and Harrogate.
