I've started creating web pages on a contract basis. Check out some of my other projects: Stetson University - Graduate Business Programs, Holiday Inn - Family Suites and ResortsTeam.Com.
I like to play a lot of sports. I am a certified PADI Rescue Diver and have gone Scuba diving in the Keys of Florida , the Bahamas, the Fort Lauderdale area in the Atlantic and many natural springs throughout Central Florida.
Fort Lauderdale was the best for me because we sighted a 6' Bull Shark (Pictured right) about 30 feet away from us. He just seemed curious, circled once and left, but I won't soon forget the experience.
Another great dive was near the Gulf Coast of Florida at Crystal River's King Spring. The water at most of the Springs in Florida is crystal-clear so the name of the river was certainly appropriate as it was no exception. Before we went on our dive though, we spent about an hour snorkeling with many of the Manatees.
There were about five or six Manatees with our group. They are huge, growing up to 15 feet long and weighing up to 1300 pounds, but docile creatures that love to play and have their tummies rubbed by snorkellers. Unfortunately they are an endangered species, and many are being killed by the propellers of boats. When boating in Florida, please observe the posted speed-limits on the waterways, because it would really be terrible to lose this wonderful animal. They are very helpful to humans as they clear irrigation and transport channels by eating water plants, and they are really fun to play with as well.
Another great place in Central Florida is Juniper Springs which is in the heart of the Ocala National Forest on Highway 40. There is a nice place to go swimming there, but that is not the highlight of this place. The 7-mile long Juniper Run is. You rent a canoe for the 3 and a half hour trip down the spring-fed river. Along this run, you can come face to face with Alligators, Deer, Wild Boars, Spiders, Owls and who knows what else. This is not Disney World, there are no fences and you are in control of your own canoe. The alligators are not likely to bother you, but when one comes next to your canoe and stares at you, it can be quite 'exhilarating'. This is the Real Florida!
I also play tennis, and baseball. I play hockey and I used to referee and coach in Canada too. I coached with a good friend of mine while we were in University. Our players were seven to 10 years old. With players that age, I believe that winning is not very important at all. Learning sportsmanship, the fundamentals of the sport and having fun are all far more important.
I recently took up downhill-skiing while living in Japan. I lived 280 km north of Tokyo, where there are many great ski resorts. I have also gone skiing in Yamagata, where there are ski resorts open as late as July because there is just so much snow. I also went skiing in Morioka, where the World Cup of skiing was once held. Unfortunately, that year the conditions were terrible and the event organizers were criticized for taking the World Cup there. Lucky for me though, the conditions were spectacular when I arrived. Soaking in a natural, outdoor hot spring afterwards was the highlight for me though.
I really enjoy water-skiing too. I go every chance I get. Unfortunately, I haven't had many chances lately. I am by no means an expert, but I can slalom-ski (I just need two skiis to get up, until next time anyway!).
Whenever I work out at the gym, I like to go swimming afterwards. I especially like swimming because you don't get sweaty, no matter how hard you work out! I received my Bronze Cross from the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada.
I like motorcycles as well. I had a Honda CBR250 (like the one pictured, only black) but sold it just before I left Japan. Driving through the mountains and along the ocean on a motorcycle just can't compete with a car ride! I drove that motorcycle all over northern Japan. In the two years that I owned it, I put 18000 kilometers on it. The most fun I had, was a trip to Lake Towada. The view of the forests along the mountain road parallel to the rugged ocean coastline was absolutely beautiful.
My new bike is a Kawasaki Vulcan 500. Instead of a chain, it has a belt-drive system. I think it makes for a smoother ride. I can't say which I prefer, because I like both so much. I do like having the 500cc engine now, but I think that a 250cc motorcycle is great for a first motorcycle.
I like to read nonfiction books. Fiction may be entertaining, but I enjoy learning about the real world. Whether it is a book on history, current affairs or possibilities for the future, fiction just can't compete with real life for me. Take a look at my Recommended Reading list.
