Alcatraz Island Lighthouse, August, 1997
The original lighthouse at Alcatraz was lit in 1854. The current tower was built in 1909. It was automated in 1963.
Alcatraz Island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, and is accessible by tour boat. A visit to the lighthouse (and Alcatraz Penitentiary) can easily take at least half a day.
Tours are available from pier 41 near Fisherman's Wharf. The trip each way takes about 30 minutes. If you plan to make the visit, take a picnic and stay all day. Between the lighthouse and the prison, there will be no shortage of things to do and see.
