Chatham Lighthouse - June, 1999
The original twin Chatham Lighthouses were built in 1808 to mark the west side of Chatham Harbor. Because of erosion, they were replaced in 1841 and again in 1877. Those two towers served Chatham until 1923, when one of them was moved to North Eastham.
The lighthouse grounds are closed to the public, but the lighthouse can be viewed close up from outside the fence. The popularity of the lighthouse is indicated by the 30 minute restriction on the parking lot across the street.
I visited Cape Cod and this lighthouse during a trip to Boston in early June, 1999. The view of the lighthouse and the shoreline were magnificent, a fitting start to a fantastic day.
