Highland Lighthouse - June, 1999
The Highland Lighthouse - sometimes called the Cape Cod Lighthouse - is the oldest one on Cape Cod. It was built in 1797 on a bluff known as High Land because of the large number of shipwrecks in the area.
In 1996, the Highland Lighthouse was moved 450 feet from its original location to prevent its demise from erosion of the cliff. Today, it is operated as a private aid to navigation by the Park Service.
The lighthouse is open to the public, with guided tours to the lantern room. As a matter of fact, when I visited in June, 1999, there was a steady procession of visitors to the top of the light.
An observation platform behind the lighthouse provides a magnificent view of the coast and the lighthouse.
Those with the time and inclination may take in a game at the golf course adjacent to the lighthouse grounds. I'm afraid that I have neither, especially when there are other lighthouse to see.
The route to the lighthouse is well marked from route 6 with a 'Cape Cod Lighthouse' sign marking the direction.
