Race Point Lighthouse - June, 1999
The Race Point Lighthouse was built at the northernmost tip of Cape Cod in 1816 to guide traffic to and from Boston. The original stone tower was replaced in 1876 by a cast iron one.
This light burned oil or kerosene until 1957, at which time it was converted to electricity.
The lighthouse can be seen from about two miles away at Herring Cove Beach, where this photograph was made from. It can be visited by taking a two mile walk along the sand beach from the Race Point Beach parking lot. When I visited Cape Cod in June of 1999, I didn't have the time for a four mile walk, so this one will have to wait for my next trip.
