Fort Amherst Lighthouse, August, 1998
The Fort Amherst Lighthouse sets on the south side of St. John's Harbour on the site of the old Fort Amherst. It is visible in the distance from Signal Hill, or by taking a drive along the south side road and a short walk.
The original lighthouse at Fort Amherst was built in 1813 and operated until 1835 by voluntary contribution from vessels entering the harbour. It was replaced by a new structure in 1852. That building was demolished in 1952 to make way for the current structure.
Until this year, the only view I ever had of the lighthouse was that from Signal Hill. All of my photographs showed it from that angle. That changed with an early morning visit during my August, 1998 visit to St. John's. The lighthouse and the remains of the old fort provided a relaxing and peaceful break for me.
To reach the lighthouse, drive west along the Southside Road to the parking lot provided by the City of St. John's, and then a short (700-800 meter) walk to the lighthouse. The parking lot is clearly marked as parking for visitors to Fort Amherst.
