Point Riche Lighthouse, August, 1998
The Point Riche Lighthouse was built in 1871, funded by the Canadian government. The original tower was replaced in 1892 and still stands. The light keepers house no longer stands - it was destroyed by fire in the late 1970s.
I have visited this lighthouse on each trip to Newfoundland since I left in 1980. I have always been fascinated by the lonely feeling I used to get being alone on the point, with nothing but the lighthouse and the sea birds. That has changed now - the lighthouse has become an official attraction. When I visited in 1998, I found a large parking area, and lots of visitors. As a matter of fact, it was difficult to photograph the lighthouse without people. That is not a bad thing though, as the lighthouse will be better maintained, and as a tourist attraction, it stands a far better chance of survival.
To get to the lighthouse from Port au Choix, follow the road to the National Historic Site. The lighthouse is about 1.5 kilometers past the site. There is more than ample parking.
