Rose Blanche Lighthouse (Old), August, 1998
The Old Rose Blanche Lighthouse is the last remaining granite lighthouse in Canada. As such it is a treasure to be preserved.
Until a couple of years ago, the lighthouse was in danger of disappearing. I had seen several pictures of it, and was afraid that I would never get a chance to see it. But a group of local people set to the task of restoring the lighthouse, and today it appears as it did when it was first constructed. I would have liked to see it, though, before reconstruction started.
I had looked forward to seeing this lighthouse for two years. During our trip to Newfoundland in 1998, this was the only must stop on my list. I decided to take in everything else there was to visit, and save the Rose Blanche Lighthouse for last. That was a mistake. On the day we visited, there was a major downpour. That didn't stop me though. I did the 5-10 minute walk through the rain from the parking lot to the lighthouse, and managed to make several photographs before the rain forced me back to the car totally drenched. But it was well worth it - I would not have missed that visit for anything in the world, let alone a little rain.
Rose Blanche is about 40 kilometers from the ferry terminal at Port aux Basques. The drive offers magnificent scenery. The lighthouse is a little difficult to find though without directions. Stop at the tourist information center at the town hall for information on the lighthouse and directions for finding it.
