Cape Ray Lighthouse, August, 1998
The first Cape Ray Lighthouse was built in 1871. A second tower was built in 1885 after the original one was destroyed by fire. In 1959, that tower also burned down and was replaced by the current concrete structure.
Cape Ray is also the site of an archaeological dig, the summer home of the Dorset Eskimos. When I used to visit Cape Ray in the early 1970s, I paid more attention to the dig than to the lighthouse.
Our visit in 1998 was a brief one. It was raining, so my time with the lighthouse was short. As a matter of fact, all of my photographs were shot from the car. We did take time to visit the Dorset museum and gift shop.
To get to the lighthouse, take the Cape Ray access road about 15 kilometers from the ferry terminal in Port aux Basques.
