Cape Blanco Lighthouse, August, 1997
The Cape Blanco lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Oregon, built in 1870. It has operated continuously since then. In 1936, the original first order lens was replaced by a slightly smaller one and the light was electrified, using 1000 watt bulbs. The current lens is between a first and second order in size.
The Cape Blanco is also Oregon's most southerly and most westerly lighthouse, and the highest above sea level at 245 feet.
The lighthouse is open to the public Thursday through Monday from 10 AM to 3:30 PM. Tours are available for a modest fee. The grounds are not accessible when the lighthouse is closed.
The lighthouse is at the end of a pleasant five mile drive off Highway 101. Take the turnoff for Cape Blanco State Park. There is lots of parking both on the grounds and at the entrance to the grounds. There are also a couple of fantastic beaches if you feel like going for a walk.
