Coquille River Lighthouse, August, 1997
The Coquille River Lighthouse was built in 1896, across the mouth of the river from Bandon, to serve as both a seacoast lighthouse and a harbor light.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1939. The lighting apparatus was removed and the building was abandoned. For many years it fell prey to heavy vandalism and graffiti; many bricks were removed from the structure.
The building was restored in 1976 through a joint venture of the Army Corps of Engineers and the Oregon State Department of Transportation. At that time, it was listed in the National Park Service Registry of Historic Places.
I have visited this lighthouse on three occasions - September 1986, December 1994 and August, 1987. On each occasion, I have enjoyed the lighthouse and the surrounding sand and rocks tremendously.
There is a great view of the lighthouse from the town of Bandon, but the lighthouse deserves a close-up view. It can be reached by taking the Bullard's Beach State Park exit from Highway 101 just north of Bandon. The lighthouse is open to the public during the day.
