Yaquina Head Lighthouse, August, 1997
The Yaquina Head Lighthouse was built in 1873. The original tower, the tallest in Oregon, still stands and the original first order fresnel lens is still in use.
The light is still operated by the US Coast Guard, but the tower is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It is open to public tours three hours a day (9:00-11:00 and 15:00-16:00). The tour, at $2.00 is well worth the time and cost.
There are claims that this light was built in the wrong location. It was supposed to have been built at Cape Foulweather about seven miles north. Because it was built in close proximity to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and provided superior service to the area, the Yaquina Bay light was discontinued in 1874.
The road to the lighthouse is about three miles north of Newport. From highway 101, follow the sign for the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area west to the lighthouse. If you wish to take the tour, check in at the ticket office at the entrance to the grounds.
