Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, August, 1997
The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was built in 1856, the first in the state of Washington. The lighthouse still operates, although the original fourth order lens has been replaced by a beacon on the outside of the tower.
The lighthouse grounds are open to the public. It can be reached by walking up a steep road from the Lewis and Clark Museum parking lot. There is also a more rugged trail from the beach at Fort Canby State Park. It can also be viewed in the distance from the beach, and make an impressive sight in the lifting morning fog.
The lighthouse was in much better shape when I first saw it in 1986. At that time it had a fresh coat of paint. Today it looks like it hasn't been very well maintained in the eleven years since my first trip.
