Above are photos of  tekoteko, carved out of totara, a soft wood. They are carved in the Te Arawa human style. On the first tekoteko, the surface pattern on the body is Maui with the pakati haehae This pattern represents the fish of Maui.. Tekoteko usually are placed on gables of houses or gateways.
