Kenrokuen Gardens, Kanazawa
In 1997 I was awarded a scholarship from Monash University to
study Japanese at the Ishikawa International Exchange Center in Kanazawa, Japan
for two and a half months. Kanazawa is a city with a population of approximately
1 million people. Kanazawa is an old Japanese castle town and is home to the Ishikawa Gate Castle and the famous Kenrokuen gardens. Kanazawa is located on the western coast of Japan and becomes very cold in winter. I stayed in Kanazawa from November 1997 to February 1998 and experienced living in the snow for the first time and incredibly windy and almost blizzard-like conditions while Melbourne, at the same time, was having one of its hottest summers ever.
It is located on the west coast of Japan on the Honshu island (150 kms west of
Nagano, 330 kms west of Tokyo).
I was placed with a wonderful host family which consisted of Aoyama-san, Satomi-san and their 11 year old daughter Sakiko-san.
During my spare time I travelled to Tokyo, Kyoto, Noto, Fukui, Osaka and Hiroshima.
