The Pacific Spiny Lobster May 1st marked the end of the lobster season. Some really rough weather in the months of March and April nearly closed out some of the best spots, but those of us that love the bug would not be denied. Kaena Point, on the north western most tip of Oahu was one of the best places I found all season (and I marked some spots on GPS for next year). This area is best accessed by boat. The city maintained road on the leeward side of the island ends at Yokohama Beach. Then it is a jeep trail that used to be a rail right of way out to the light on the point. Very rough going, but if you don't have a boat I guess that is a possibility. We anchored in the lee of the point in about 50 feet of water. Lobster heaven... Numerous holes and lava tubes, nooks and crannies for the bugs to hide in. Lobsters are scavengers, and do most of their feeding at night. Because of this that is the best time to catch them. The only legal way to take them is with your hands. They must not be speared or hooked or grappled. That makes it fun though. Careful where you stick your hand.... Mr. Moray likes to hang out in the holes too. Some of the biggest eels I've seen in 26 yrs of scuba diving are right here in Hawaii.
