Grand Olympic Auditorium

Review

I was hammered standing in a line full of anxious skate punks, strippers, overaged drinkers, beat me kids, never-made-it-in-Hollywood types, beautiful beings, you name it. Every culture was represented at this sold out show in L.A. to catch a glimpse of this mesmerizing band called "Jane's Addiction." I myself was mixed in with the crowd just like every other melting ice cube over Wild Turkey. These tough guy security guards were there to keep things in order, but I managed to bring 100 proof soco, lots of yerba, camara w/extra film and a good attitude, so I was able to slip on by. Before I noticed I was on the ground level jumping up and down to Fishbone. As soon as they were mellowly kicked off of the stage, the scene was intense. People rushed in from one side of the lower level section to get onto the floor to their success. As soon as the lights dimmed people knew it was all about to happen again.

"3, 4...Wish I was Oceansize." The crowd started to freak out jumping ferociously to the beat. All four members looked beautiful against the multi-level main stage. The almost bare naked dancers were full of sensual moves opening and closing their oriental cocktail umbrellas, while Perry and Co. began playing Then She Did. After finishing a few more songs, Perry finally brought his bottle of wine out holding it high in the air as if he were giving it to us. My mind started fading in and out as my body was rejecting all the poison in my body. Before I knew it, Dave, Flea and Perry were all in the air 2 stories high. Perry, separated himself from the band atop a 30 foot tower, with sexy dancers underneath, miming his way to the upper level crowd. As Perry started singing "Summertime Rolls" it was though people were fixing on him, as if they were hitting a vein for the first time. And numb the crowd he did.

As the crew again reunited they took postition on the second lower stage. With a mostly unnoticed computerized beat, it layed the ground for what was about to come. Dave started strumming his 12 string acoustic guitar, Stephen started pouncing his steel drums which quickly evolved into an extended version of "Jane Says." Afterwards Perry exclaims "Everyone likes to rock," but then says its also good to slow down and look at beautiful women, a "Classic Girl."

The band ended with "Ted Just Admit It...," but unexpectedly ended the night with people expecting an encore. But hey, what other band could displace you for hours even though you were smack in the middle of south central L.A.? Although my mind and body are not one yet, I am still recovering from a bliss night out.
