The Maligcong Rice Terraces is just like the more famous Banawe Rice Terraces: With one exception - This Rice terraces were carved from the mountainside and were reinforced with stones. The Maligcong tribe laboriously cracked boulders to more manageable sizes, or carried stones from the beds of streams and a river down at the foot of the mountain in order to "riprap" the walls of the terraces, and thus forestall erosion. This also conserves water in the process. This terraces are not easily accessible, where one can either hike from Bontoc, Mountain Province, or wait for one of the small jeeps that ply the very rough and steep road to the terraces. Hitchhiking is not an option. Warning! The whole tribe easily get angry with visitors who start uncontrolled forest fires. The terraces are quite breath-taking when viewed during planting season.
