Day One

One week passes..

These next pictures are taken one week later. Sometime during the first week I overwatered the cup, and it got soggy and muddy in there. As a result, the seed sunk in the mud to someplace I couldn't see it. I dug around gently looking for it, however I couldn't see it. However, I did find a sprout deep inside the muck which most likely is the original seed, although we can't be sure. I had sorted the dirt out before planting to make sure there wasn't any extraneous seeds in there. So basically this is either original seed or another seed that sneeked in there accidentally. Either way it is now the token "Leaf of Grass". Below are shots of this leaf after one week.

Week One

Here are pictures from one week after the planting. Taken on Sunday, July 12, 1998. The grass is now approximately half an inch tall (1.25 cm) from the dirt level. Since planting holes have been punched in the bottom with a thumbtack so that I won't overwater it again. The cup now rests on a small plate suspended slightly above it by 4 pennys as seen in the bottom right picture.

  One Week Passes..

Week Two

As you can see from the above pictures, the grass has been very busy with creating itself, and seems to be flourishing in its new overwater-safe container. The grass has nearly grown over the top of the cup. It is now just below an inch and a half. Growing just about an inch since last week. Its very tall (see how tall!) and I have been giving it plenty of water and sunshine. Soon I will publish growth chart on this page to show how the grass grows. As yet I don't have that many points to plot a graph of any significance.

In addition to the growth of token grass other exciting things have been happening in the cup. It seems the original grass (as yet unnamed) has found some friends that have decided to room with him and are growing along side. These friends are what looks to be 2 other smaller grass blades, and a clover plant. I have decided to let these guys stay in the cup although originally I wanted to grow just one blade of grass. The reason I decided to keep them is that the main idea of this project is to appreciate the beauty of nature and life and not to destroy it, therefore I can not bring myself to destroy these other symbols of natural beauty and life. So there you have it, they will stay and grow along side the other and mabye someday down the road, we will document their growth as well. In any case, you will most likely be seeing them in the upcoming pictures. Which will be taken every Sunday.

Also you may have noticed a significant drop in the soil level in the cup.. Basically it just settled when I watered it. Soon I will put more in or transplant it if nessecary. Keep checkin the page for more updates.
