Christeel makes a half bow to the gathering, "My apologies, we'll try to keep it down" Christeel will be happy to talk to any that wish to hang around makeing sure that his conversation with them will keep them plenty busy, while the others make sure that the bodies are hidden. If Christeel see a group aproaching he will cast an unseen servant spell before they arrive. Foldis (after her search) I will leave everything where I found it. Onyx Is the hammer small but functional, or is it like an ornament or a religious symbol? If it is ornamental I will take it. I am thinking that maybe it is something all of the kidnappers have, in which case it might come in handy. FOLDIS, "Why so interested in the hammer Onyx. It might just have a religious purpose but surely most of the carnival workers will be carrying something around to do small repairs". (small hammer.... functional... for driving nails, stakes into ground.) Onyx I will get the group together as soon as possible, but I will ask Verdak to stay around for a minute. "Verdak my friend, would you be so kind as to wait here for a few minutes? I need to ask my companions something and then I would like to talk to you. Verdak stands a few paces back waiting quietly, but you can all tell he wears a grim expression on his face, even for a dwarf. When the group gets together: "I think we should tell Verdak what has happened and about all of our suspicions. I trust him and he can help us. I do not necessarily think we need him to take a very active roll in going after AJ, but he can be very helpful. Verdak is influential with the carnival people, and if we cause a big commotion and we get caught, he can help us with them. At the very least he could talk them out of lynching us and get them to listen to us first. I want to get everyons else's opinion before I say anything to Verdak since we have two bodies in the wagon. Speaking of the bodies, before we go wandering off we need to get them out of our wagon and hide them in the woods. If things start going bad for us the last thing we need is to have two dead bodies in our wagon. Foldis, I agree that we can probably trust Verdak. He may also be able to provide us with further info in the "thin man". As for the bodies, if we are going to put them in the woods it may be prudent to try to make it look as though they were attacked by thieves. Maybe a few arrows lying in and/or around the bodies, the bodies stripped of anything valuable etc. Jeath "Where the hell is Erilyx? Have you notice every time something happens to us he's nowhere to be found? For all I know he's in with the kidnappers. "I'm indifferent on Verdak. You guys do what you want. I'm going to look for Erilyx. I'll meet you all where we hid near AJ's wagon in about fifteen minutes. And I think moving the bodies around a lot is not a good idea, but leaving them in our wagon where anyone can find them is even worse." I'll wait till they decide whether or not to tell Verdak, just so I know. Then I head out to do a quick search for Erilyx, but I will be at AJ's wagon fifteen minutes from the time I leave the group. After the event has died down Christeel will return back to the wagon. "We didn't have the time needed to dispose of the bodies, If they had seen us running into the woods they would have known that something was up, but now we need to move the bodies into the woods a good way, I have a feeling that some of the people are going to complain to A.J. about our noise, When he gets here we will need to make sure that no bodies give us away. Jaeth you could head out and check in A.J. wagon when he comes here to question us. The Dwarven members could take the bodies into the woods, and the rest could remain hear to watch the wagons and talk with A.J. and any company that he beings along." Finally Verdak can stay silent no longer. As you talked he kept glancing nervously over his shoulder up the road. He stomps forward loud enough even in the grass to be heard, warning you of his approach. "Alright, young'uns, what happened here. And be quick about it." Darrin gulps, but then quickly says, "My cousin was kidnapped, and we were trying to find her," he begins. Verdak stops him quickly, "Yes. I was told already. What happened here?" Darrin shakes his head and stammers, "A stranger came to attack us, we think to kill Erilyx, but then the guard... the half-orc and Onyx stopped him. He's dead and in our wagon. And so is... the half-orc...." he trails off. Verdak scowls, and says, "You'll have the whole caravan on your heads. No matter who they were. We stick together, like I told your friends." Darrin ducks his head in shame. "And if the ones who kidnapped your cousin is here, he probably already knows that this attempt was thwarted... I don't think you'll find her..." Verdak stops unable to continue. "Jeath thinks it's AJ's wagon," the words rush from Darrin. Verdak looks up the road, where most everyone at the scene had dispersed to, and looks back up at Darrin with a shake of his head. "You'd best go then, and quickly. I'll stay here and help get rid of the bodies. If they are found in your wagon, I may not be able to help you much except try to keep you from being hanged. Unless you have some proof against them." Christeel looks around at the group, "The bodies need to be taken into the woods quickly, time is not on our side. Jeath I will go with you to A.J. wagon if you may require my assistance, if not I will remain here, and help watch over the wagon. I don't feel this is my mess to clean up, but I will help if it is needed." Christeel looks in Onyx direction. "It seems you blame me for Iago's death. While it is true I was the one who killed him, you were standing there when he went nuts and attacked me. If you didn't notice, he paid no attention to your attempt to talk to him. You might also want to think of this, you still had your weapon drawn. Do you think he would have stopped at killing me? Christeel replies, "I don't blame you for your actions, he did charge you and all. I just saying that I didn't make this bloody mess (pointing in the direction of Iago), Killing him is fine but did you need to chop his head off." Jeath "I'm outa here. Meet you guys at AJ's wagon in a little bit." Skip Erilyx, I go straight to AJ's wagon taking care to remain unnoticed on the way. I will stay close to the wagons to see if AJ is headed this way or not. If I see him I will break into his wagon when I get there. If I don't see him I will stake it out and wait to see what happens. Onyx "Verdak, I am sorry we have caused you so much trouble. We know AJ Is involved with the kidnapping and he is the one who senf the assassin after Erilyx. We have no physical proof of this, just what Jeath overheard. Iago could have backed us up, but for some reason he went nuts and attacked me. He is in the wagon with the would be assassin. The only way we are going to get any proof is to get it from AJ himself, and in order to do that we will have to go to his wagon immediately, before he can get rid of Zeptha. I know we should hide the bodies before we do anything else, but that would waste valuable time and give AJ more of an advantage. Finding Zeptha is more important than protecting ourselves. Could you hide the bodies in the woods for us? I know it is unfair to ask this of you, and we will understand if you can't help, but if we don't act now it may be too late to save Zeptha." "Ok everyone, we need to get moving. Jeath will be at AJ's wagon soon and I think we should be there too. If we want to save Zeptha now is the time to act. Let's go t oAJ's wagon and make him wish he had never taken Zeptha." I start off towards AJ's wagon, axe in hand and fire in eyes. Darrin grips his axe, much like the dwarf before him, and looks just as grim as he heads up the road. You don't see anyone going towards your wagon and campsite area, instead folks are fanning out, looking in every direction on either side of the road. As you go by though, several of the carny folks, stop their searching and tag along... most look like they are keeping an eye on you. AJ stands at the back of his wagon, issuing orders to several of his men. He trails off, as he looks down the road. AJ says sharply, "What's this? The murderers come to face the accusation. How dare you murder that girl, and think you pin it on someone in this carny just by meeting up with us for a day." Darrin stands flabbergasted and confused and before anyone can say a word of accusation towards AJ, two men, one Verdak's weightlifting assistant, come from the woods, bearing Zeptha's body between them, a dagger lodged between her ribs. There is no movement... Darrin's blood chilling scream will echo in your darkest dreams. Christeel will quickly run toward the two men bearing Zeptha's body, In a strong and commanding voice Christeel will say "Put her down now, be gentle about it, and back away less you end up a corpse, I am not in a good mood this day." Christeel will quickly examin Zeptha noting any injuries, and check for any signs of life. He will cast a cure lt wounds if there is any at all. Christeel will remove the dagger, and check for any poison and then thurst the dagger into the ground. Christeel will look one of the men carring Zeptha and say "You best tell what happen to her, I am tired of guessing" Christeel will say to A.J. "You have picked the wrong, woman to kidnap, If you think that you can put her accident off on us you are sadly mistaken. You will answer for her harm." "We did not harm that woman. she was abducted from her room at the inn in the village and we followed the tracks of her kidnappers to the carnival campsite. We then naturally caught up with your caravan in the hopes that we might find the kidnappers. It has come to our attention that there is a group of people that are new to the caravan, perhaps we could question them before you go flinging accusations. We had no reason to kill her. She is family to our boss and the rest of us liked and respected her. We had nothing to gain by hurting her. Perhaps you should look into the activities of the new people to the caravan, unless you are afraid of the truth." I keep an eye on the crowd while I am talking to see if they are getting ready to try and capture us. If I see anyone drawing a weapon I will also draw my axe. While Onyx speaks, Darrin falls to his knees at Zeptha's side, and it his anguish which speaks of her condition, more so than Christeel's failure to even attempt a healing spell. AJ says quickly, "You are the newcomers to this caravan. The rest of us have been together for at least two years or more. The only other newcomer, is my new guard Iago." He glances around quickly, and then says loudly, "And if you know where he and Garth are, you'd best speak up now, because I have some of the others out searching for them. I didn't know Iago very long, but if he isn't being detained, he would have been here taking charge of this matter, and letting the rest of us honest folk sleep peacefully tonight." Paolo speaks up, with his wife and four daughters standing staunchly behind him. The four daughters are Vrey, Vea, Rui and Meli. He says harshly, "There is more to this than meets the eye." You see Vrey whisper something in his ear. "It seems you are accusing these folk of killing the girl, and yet my daughter says that she is his cousin and he looks extremely distraught at her... death." AJ speaks quickly, "And who would you accuse then? Which of our number, Paolo?" The man seems to look a little flustered but then Vea says strongly, "We are but a day from Waterdeep. They have Lords and courts to decide these issues. They would even know who speaks the truth." AJ scowls, "And what if two of our companions are found dead. Then should we await the justice of outsiders?" DM's Note... Even as these folk are talking back and forth, Darrin has locked his gaze on AJ, and is reaching for his battle axe in the dirt. There is a look of fire in his eyes... FOLDIS As Foldis is at present only armed with her dagger her first action is to try to grab her Axe from within the wagon . You are a ways away from the wagon. Whether she manages to get to her axe or not she will move to stand next to Darrin and lay a hand on his shoulder trying to keep him as calm as possible until further actions are needed. Onyx I look at AJ: "I think we will be more than willing to submit this situation to the courts at Waterdeep. If what that young lady says is true about them being able to tell who is telling the truth then it would be logical to go to them. Unless, of course, you have something to hide. If we are guilty of anything the courts will be able to determine our guilt. Likewise, if someone else is guilty of something the courts will also be able to determine that as well. I and my companions are not afraid to submit ourselves to the justice of the courts in Waterdeep. Are you?" I note that Foldis is next to Darrin and I will try to keep track of him in the corner of my vision while addressing AJ. If Foldis is unable to stop him (as I get the feeling he is about to charge AJ) I will try to prevent him from reaching AJ. I will try to tackle him if I can, otherwise I will place myself between him and AJ and try to reason with him. I will not draw my Axe on Darrin. A voice from the crowd asks Verdak's assistant, "When and where did you find the body?" The young man looks up surprised to be addressed. He begins to stutter badly, "I..I.. we..we...we...c..c.came..." The other man with him, interrupts him softly, "We were coming back from that commotion this lot was making up the road at their wagon, the one they said was just sword play." Another carny worker, a big burly human, calls out, "More than likely they were covering up the sounds of their murder." "I bet Iago was on to them. They probably killed him as well," calls out an older woman. Paolo says quickly, "Hold on now. No need to shout accusations. Let us proceed with caution as my daughters are wise enough to council." You notice that he glares at AJ as he speaks. "One side claims that AJ did this crime, and the other side claims the boy here killed his cousin," he says stepping up to Foldis's side and placing his hand on Darrin's other shoulder. Darrin looks up, startled at the stranger's touch. "We will search AJ's wagon, and then we will search the stranger's wagon as well. This seems fair to me." There are several cries of assent in the group, it seems his idea is well recieved. "I will go into AJ's wagon, who will come with me? He leans down and whispers something in Darrin's ear, and immediately Darrin lowers his head and sits huddled on the ground beside his cousin. Onyx I step forward. "I will go into the wagon with you. Of course, AJ, you are welcome to accompany us as well as it is your wagon we are going to search." I look to Verdak's assistant: "It is a good thing your friend covered for you or some might wonder if you actually found the body where you say" Another person asks AJ, "How did you know they were bringing back a body if they just found it on their way back?" AJ tries to find the source of the voice in the crowd, and looks quite displeased that any of the carny members would question him. But he maintains his cool and says, "When the body was found, I was told immediately, and I asked these two to bring the body back here, as I asked others to search for any more bodies. I fear for two of our members, but if Paolo wants to search my wagon, he may do so." AJ steps down from the wagon, and adds, "But, I shall search the wagon of these strangers... and any of you that wish to come may join me." Again a voice calls out to AJ: "Let me get this straight. They found a murdered woman in the woods and left her there? But he just said they found her on their way back from the commotion at the other wagon?" AJ replies, "That is what they told me when they came to the wagon. They said they had found a body after seeing what the commotion was at the strangers wagon, and I told them to bring the body here, while summoning others to help find out what was going on. And you," he glares at Onyx. "That young man has a stuttering problem. We take all kinds here in the carnival, including half-orcs, and I understand that you dwarves were giving my guard problems earlier. If I do not find him, I will only have to look at the both of you, of that I am certain." "But come, then, Paolo, dwarf," AJ continues. "Come into my wagon, I do not need to attend you, I am sure. I have nothing to hide in my wagon anyway." With that he steps down from his wagon, bringing him within a couple of feet of Darrin, who looks up at him for a few seconds, and then glancing at Foldis's hand, the boy ducks his head again, though there is still fire in his eyes. Christeel will say, "Yes, I agree with the voice from the crowd, it is quite convient that you knew of Zeptha death, Who was it that brought you word of her death? Asking the two that carried her back, especially the one who stammered, "Was she dead, when you found her? Where was she found? I would like to see the location. I am quite good at figuring out puzzles. Murderers always leave evidence of there deeds. Why did you not remove the blade from her body, when you found her, you realize that by carring her with the blade still in her you only were makeing sure that she had no chance of living, unless of course that is what you wanted all along. Christeel will look over the two that came from the woods and look for any signs that they were behind the murder." The stammering boy forces the words out, "I... we... found..the..the.. the." "We found the body!" the other man practically shouts. "Lay off of him!" he shouts and several people in the crowd are starting to mutter at your accusations. He continues, "She was already dead. We didn't touch the dagger, figuring some smart guy would claim it was evidence and be upset that we touched it. I never would have moved her, if she was alive still." Christeel speak at A.J. "You think you can hide the fact that you were behind this kidnaping, where everything that we have uncovered since joining up with your caravan, points directly at you, (extending a acusing hand at A.J.). Yes let's let the courts of waterdeep, use their magic to uncover the real truth about Zeptha abduction and murder. But I'm sure that your true color will show itself and you will turn and run before we reach Waterdeep now that we have ruined your plans to ransom Zeptha, I did not think you would stoop to murder of a prize that would have brought you lots of money, there is no profit in this action. less we were to close to the truth and the only way to hide from this is to have her murdered and then try to put the blame on someone else." AJ turns red and says quickly, "Where is your proof to make these accusation? I don't know even know who she is!" he says adamantly. Paolo turns to Christeel as he ascends the steps to AJ's wagon. "If you would accuse him before we get to Waterdeep, you will need evidence to convince us. Just the fact that she is his cousin will not be enough. It seems you and your friends would like to point the blame anywhere but on yourselves." Vrey whispers softly, "Christeel and you others, unless you have proof that AJ did this, you will not sway these good people against one of their own." It is not soft enough however, because there are several murmers of agreement within the crowd. Christeel will say to A.J. "You may examine our wagon, but I will come along and keep a careful eye on you, less you try to something funny. Christeel will walk over the the dagger that had been thrust into the ground and pull it forth and examine the dagger, "Does anyone recognize this Dagger? It was used in Zeptha murder. Knowing who it belongs to would be a great help in finding out who is behind this. Christeel holds up the dagger high for all to see. The dagger is an ordinary dagger, cheaply made and with a plain crosspiece. No one that glances towards you, makes any comment to it's origin or owner. Onyx > "You are welcome to search our wagon as we have nothing to hide. However, I > say regardless of the outcome of both searches, we continue to Waterdeep to > let the courts decide on this matter. Sir, I say as I step towards AJ > holding out my hand, I will ask for your word on this matter. No matter the > outcome of the searches, we will continue to the courts of Waterdeep where > the truth may be uncovered. I give you my word that no action will be taken > against any member of your caravan by myself or my companions (as I say this > I will make eye contact with the members of the group I can see and wait for > their agreement) and I ask that you give me your word that you and no > member of your caravan will take any actions against myself or my companions. > > I hold out my hand to AJ and wait for his response. Just as AJ begins to reach for the Dwarf's hands with a sigh, the voice calls out again from the crowd to the left of the wagon: "How is it they found the body and none of the rest of us saw it? Everyone was there in the woods. Except you. And them. Where were you when all the commotion started?" AJ wheels around, and says, "Who is questioning me? Step forward if you would accuse me any further. I can not believe a member of my troupe would think so badly of me. I have always treated everyone well, and we have guards to look into these matters. I sent them forth to find out about the commotion while I stayed at my wagon to coordinate, just as I have always done in an emergency. Now, who are you, I say? Come forth this instant." The young man without the stutter replies quickly, "And we found the body, because we was... well, I had to water me horse..." he trails off as several members of the crowd began to laugh. "I was not going to do it, with everyone around. And then I looked just past the tree I had chosen and thought I saw blond hair. It was this poor girl. I will gladly tell my story before the judges' of Waterdeep, if any of you think I could do this foul deed." The stammering man nods quickly in agreement. Onyx "Let us stop the accusations, they are not helping anything. AJ, as soon as I have your word no actions will be taken against my companions we can get on with the searches. You should find the member of your caravan that doesn't approve of you later when there is not a murderer to find." AJ glances around rapidly, and then looking back at the dwarf he says, "I agree to take this matter to Waterdeep, but only because she is not a member of this carnival troupe. I am sure that none of my people killed her. However, I am still missing two of my people... if they have been harmed, I can not speak for the rest of these good people. We are like family here," he says with a kind smile. AJ puts forth his hand as Paolo enters the wagon. Christeel looks to the rest of the party that is present, "Where the hell is Pherez, he seems to disapear when things happen. I just might ring his neck when he returns." Christeel will be intrested in looking at the confines of A.J. the wagon but will not enter unless A.J. enter first. Christeel will say about the dagger, "I will keep this dagger, untill we reach waterdeep, I will turn it over to the courts so that they may properly, investigate the dagger. since I have been the only one to touch the dagger since these two found her in the woods." Onyx: "Are you telling me if you give your word that neither you nor any member of your caravan will take action against us that your word is not good? I thought you were the leader of this caravan. If you give your word it should be binding. If you are such a close family as you say, then your people should respect you enough to honor your word when you give it." AJ says, "I am their leader in that, I see to campsites and carnival sites, but we do things as a group. We vote and take matters under consideration as a family. I will not tell anyone here not to be concerned of two of our missing brethern. But, I will promise to try to hold them in check should anything have happened to Garth or Iago. That is the best I can do. I am more than willing to allow the Law of Waterdeep see to the matter of this poor girl here." Even as he speaks, Verdak steps forth from the crowd having caught Foldis's eye. "Agree Master Strongarm, please. As a whole we are an honest folk, and all hear would see the Law deal with such matters. Aye?" he says glancing around him. There are several murmers of assent, but then Verdak catches sight of Zeptha and he bows his head, heaving a heavy sigh. He steps towards Darrin and says hoarsely, "I'm truly sorry, lad." Christeel will ask, "If you were getting a drink of water for your horse, then why did the two of you carrying her, If you had brought her back on your horse, I might have been able to save her. I guess you left your horse back at the watering hole that you found her at." Onyx "Uh, Christeel, he was not really getting a drink of water for his horse. It was a colorful euphamism for a bodily function. I guess Elves lead somewhat sheltered lives." I put my head in my hands to hide my embarassment. Christeel looks at Onyx, "My error, I have never heard releaving one self phrased quite like that, I have a lot to learn about the rest of this world." Christeel not even phased by Onyx embarassment of he lack of understanding looks back to the two who carried Zeptha. "Well did you releive yourself, and then bring Zeptha back, or do you have to, Now what was that phrase get a drink of water for your horse? The man is about to respond, when Christeel's butt is tweaked from behind and he jumps in surprise. There is no one behind Christeel, but there is a lot of laughter in a very tense setting. "Wait a moment Onyx. Verdak will you come along as well, sort of as an independent witness, you seem to be trusted by these people and I think most of us trust you as well. Maybe you should bring someone else along as well AJ" says Foldis. Verdak looks at Foldis and giving her a half smile, he says, "Sure, lass. I'll go take a look. And then we shall be on our way soon. The sun's edge is already beginning to creep over yonder mountains." He quickly bounds up the stairs and follows Paolo into the wagon. "Let's get this settled, eh, Paolo." Onyx I will shake AJ's hand and accept his word, even thought I know it is not worth anything. I will then follow Paolo and Verdak into AJ's wagon. FOLDIS. Foldis stays with Darrin until the others leave AJ's Wagon. in on himself, a sob escaping his lips. Onyx heads into the wagon after Verdak turns and says, "We will be right back..." he says softly. Minutes later they re-emerge and Verdak says to everyone present, "Well, we found nothing out of the ordinary in the wagon." FOLDIS, "Well AJ, I suppose we should go and look in our wagon now, would you like to lead the way." She then puts her arm around Darrin and tries to lead him towards the wagon saying softly over her shoulder. "Christeel would you mind staying here and looking after ... things." Christeel looks to Foldis and gives a nod, "I will stay here and see to Zeptha body, and make sure she is properly prepared." AJ allows Onyx and Verdak to lead the way, down the road. The morning light is starting to warm things up, and as you walk, AJ says quickly, "When we see that nothing is amiss, we must prepare to head out for Waterdeep. I would like us to get to our usual campsite at the east gate before dark. So let us not take too much time at this. I would just like to see Iago and Garth turn up, I would hate to leave them behind." But when you get to the area where the wagon should be, it is gone. There are tracks from behind, but they are the tracks your wagon made arriving last night, and there are tracks forward, but they are the tracks of the wagon ahead of you. Only Verdak does not look surprised. Onyx "What in the name of the Nine Hells happened to our wagon?" Has anyone seen our wagon? I say we look for the wagon for a while to make it look good and then we find room in another wagon so we can get on the road. I will see if Verdak has any room in his wagon. Foldis To AJ "What the hell have you done with our wagon?" To Verdak when/if she can speak to him so that AJ and other carny folk cannot hear, "Would you happen to have a spare Axe in my wagon that I could borrow, I feel rather defenceless with only this little toothpick " Christeel Christeel will come up short and look and listen to see what is going on with the group standing around the wagon. Using his ranger ability he will look for any tracks. Christeel will whistle for his horse still holding the limp body of Zeptha over his sholder. (Thinking to himself, I do not like the way things are going, without a wagon I guess I no longer have a job, I will find out who is behind this, and they will pay for this. Now where is my horse, and what to do now?) AJ practically explodes at Foldis, "Why is it always me that you accuse? I have done nothing with your wagon, just as I did nothing to that girl." Darrin steps in between the raging carny master and the dwarf and says strongly, "I can not prove that you killed her, and I really don't care where the wagon is, but once we get to Waterdeep and have the Law on our side, you will pay. I swear it!" AJ steps forward, his hand ready to shove into Darrin's chest, but Verdak is there between them and glaring up at AJ, saying, "The boys distraught, boss. Let it go. Enough violence has been done here." You can see AJ's mind working behind his steely eyes, and he steps back away from the confrontation. "The day is wasting. If you find your wagon fine, we are moving out!" AJ calls out to his people. AJ turns to head up the road not seeming to really care at all. Verdak says over his shoulder to the two dwarfs, "You are all welcome to climb on my wagon." He whispers to Christeel, " I had one of my lads drive the wagon back towards the last town, and then he'll head around east of us and bring the wagon to Waterdeep. I know where to meet him. Your riding horses are tied up to my wagon right now, and all I could do was hope no one noticed." Darrin says, "Why move our wagon?" Verdak grins and says, "You couldn't have explained all the blood could you? And easier to leave the bodies in it and make the whole mess disappear. Come on, now, let's get out of here. Where's the little elf at?" Darrin looks up at Christeel and says softly, "I'll take her, Christeel." His eyes tell how much he appreciates your help, as he struggles to hold back his tears.
