Chelder Drenastar
This is one of my farovite AD&D characters that I've made, and the most common MUD name I use as well. I have listed below all of the stats as of his retirement from adventuring. Any time I use him in a MUD, I always consider it to be earlier in his career, and turns out to be not hard to explain, as you'll see later.
Race: Half-elf (more on this later...)
Class: Thief / Mage
Level: 20 / 16
Sex: Male
Age: 68 (retired) 131 (death)
Note: I am not listing hit points, armor class, and other "little" things that can be easily determined. Other physical information can be found later.
Ability scores:
Str: | Dex: | Con: | Int: | Wis: | Cha: |
12 | 18 | 11 | 14 | 9 | 10 |
These are the actual ability scores for the original AD&D character. MUD ability scores will vary.
Proficiencies:
Okay... Let's be honest here. Just by looking at someone, can you tell what they're skilled with? 9 times out of 10, there's no way in hell. So I'm only listing what he appears skilled with: Dagger, Sling, Healing, Herbalism, Rope use, Juggling, Swimming, Reading/Writing(Elven, Dwarven, Common(2 forms)).
Now that that's done, here's some other things that he's careful about showing off: Long sword, Short sword, Blind-fighting, Reading lips.
Equipment:
This is only what can be proved that he has on him when he travels: Dagger (+4), Bracers (AC 2), Cloak (of Protection +4), 2 rings (Wizardy and Protection +3), glasses (Lenses of Far Seeing in a wire frame. He's nearsighted naturally), plus other standard equipment and clothing.
Other items in his inventory include: Elven chain +2, "Avenger" (more later), standard thief equipment.
Appearance:
Height: 5' 9"
Weight: 142
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Chelder is an unassuming person, just another face in the crowd. Normally found wearing either a brown and blue coloured robes or a neon green shirt and black pants -- both with a dark blue felt hat -- he still maganges to blend in until he wants to be noticed. His "glasses" are always with him, usually hanging from a chain on his neck. Rumors circulate about others seeing him with a tail, but these can't be proven.
Personality:
Likeable. He puts others before himself, and despite his small size, will defend his friends to the best of his ability. Those he considers as friends will stay that way until they do otherwise, but enemies will always be enemies. He refuses to work for money, but will not think twice about selling stuff he steals.
Other Information:
Chelder has the natural ability to run. He can out run some horses (running mvement rate of 30, top speed of just over 51 mph outdoors), and has always been this way, but he cannot hold that speed for more than 15 seconds. It is believed that he has a fondness for polymorph spells, and has an extreme hatred for lizard men. It has been confirmed that he has somehow gained the ability to teleport. He can't do it that often, and he appears weak afterwards, but he can do it.
"Avenger" -- Chelder's personal sword. Made from a mixture of dwarven steel and mithril, forged by Marchon Demens, Chelder's oldest living friend, and enchanted by himsef. It carries a +3 bonus, but has the following other properties: +4 vs. Dragons, +6 vs. reptiles, +9 and double damage vs. Lizard men. It will emit a faint green glow in the presence of any of the afore mentioned creatures.
Background:
The village of Thranarack was slated to be the first half-elf settlement in the known world. It ran fine for it's first few months of existance. Then one day, a band of lizard men raided the village, slaughtering the unprepared villagers. One person survived this blitzkrieg-style strike, and the lizard men used her for their own whims. But being a strong-willed woman, she fought back at her rapists a bit late, ripping the eye out of the one on her. She fled from the island, and returned to her homeland, far from the village. Then one winter afternoon, she died giving birth to a son. She was able to give him a name before she died: Chelder. A word from the old tongue of her homeland meaning "revenge".
Chelder's early childhood was spent with him splitting his time between running from the older children and practicing in the magical arts. It wasn't long before he started dabbling as a thief to try to get back at the older children. Upon turning 18, he learned of his mother's true fate, and where he really belongs. So he set off to find Thranarack. Along the way, he encountered a group of adventurers hoping to defeat the fallen god Salistah. He joined them, hoping to find some clues as to the location of the village. It was here that he met Marchon Demens, a dwarven weaponsmith from the mountains near his mother's homeland. This band travelled together for several years, during which time Chelder learned of parallel lands, but was never interesting in exploring them. Then, about 2 weeks before the band was to encounter and defeat Salistah, Chelder received a vital clue, and left the band. He travelled to the Far Continents and explored there.
This period of his history is the "fuzzy" part. Not much is known of his whereabouts, but stories are told of a travelling mage that would perform little tricks in village squares before staying the night and moving on the next day. It is believed that he may have spent a good part of the unknown 15 years in other worlds (Gotta have some place to explain his presence in a MUD). His past becomes clear again when he finally meets Marchon again, 15 years after he left. Marchon brings yet another clue to the mystery of Thranarack, and after forging "Avenger", the two set out to find the village. Along the way, they encounter another band, this one seeking to destroy the second icon of evil, the lich Gredon Jakara. Here Chelder met Litha Thragrath (his future wife) and her brother Drathor. Shortly after joining the band, Chelder was able to find the location of Thranarack. Upon his arrival, it took all of his self control to prevent himself from killing every lizard man he saw, but instead decided to challenge their leader.
Both sides were surprised by this. The lizard men didn't expect such a challenge, and Chelder didn't expect their leader to be his real father. With the challenge accepted, Chelder "borrowed" his sword from Marchon, and the battle began. Chelder nearly lost his right ear in that battle, but contiued on to win by teleporting behind the leader and driving "Avenger" through his back. By proving his superiority over the lizard men's leader, they all scattered off the island, never to be seen again. Chelder asked Marchon to watch over Thranarack while he assisted the adventurers they were with, and the band set of to find and defeat Jakara. The band returned to Litha's home, lessened by two members, and Litha and Chelder were married. Afterwards, they returned to Thranarack, only to find it empty, and Marchon was no where to be found. An empty grave with Marchon's name on it is there to this day, being maintained by Litha and her children. Chelder passed away in his sleep at the age of 131, having fulfilled his mother's wishes.
