A medly of terminology from my (admittedly limited) experience in muds and a smattering of notes from web sources. This list is in no way the definitive list- just a little something I've cobbled together in my spare time. Enjoy!

AUP- Acronym- Acceptable Use Policy.

Builder- Someone on the MU* that creates rooms, mobs, and items. Sometimes characters can have this ability without the greater access to the MU* immorts, wizards, and gods are afforded.

Character- The alter ego of the player, the actual character in the game you try to roleplay. Interchangable with player.

Client- A program other than telnet used to connect to MU*s. Has additional features to help enhance and, in many cases automate, the gaming experience with scripts.

Emote- To express an emotion without words. Within a MU* its a way to have your character take an action that displays to other characters but does not actually effect anything.

Furry- A roleplayed subgenre of anthropmorphic animals; that is, animals with human characteristics: speech, bipedal stance and movement, etc. Many MUCKs have a furry theme.

God- Usually someone on the MU* who has a lot of authority and builds. Interchangable with wizard and immortal.

Idle- Logged on to the MU* but not doing anything. Most MU*s will log you off if you're idle too long.

Immortal- Or immort. Someone who has control over the MU* and/or creates things on the MU*. Interchangable with god and wizard.

Mob- The monsters or NPCs in the game. Programmed in with varying degrees of communication and combat skills.

MOO- Acronym- MUD Object Orientated. The first MOO was created by Stephen White. The original source code is LamdaCore, created by Pavel Curtis, but additional versions inclde JHCore and enCore. MORE

MU*- Or MU***, M*, or M***. Generic term that stands for MUDs in general and variations thereof such as MUD, MUCK, MOO, MUSH, MUSE, MUX etc.

MUCK- Acronym- Multi User Chat Kingdom (alt. Multi User Character Kit). Almost always social orientated with object creation done by characters. Very rarely if ever involves killing or leveling and allows players to create objects. The original source code is TinyMUCK created by Stephen White in 1990. MORE

MUD- Acronym- Multi User Dungeon or Multi User Domain or Multi User Dimension. Text based role-playing game- almost always killing mobs to level and gain new abilities. Room, mob, and object creation handled by Immortals, Builders, or Gods depending on the Mud but almost never by players.

MUD1- Generally accepted as the first MUD created by Richard Bartle and Roy Trubshaw in 1979-1980.

MURPE- Acronym- Multi User Role Playing Environment.

MUSE- Acronym- Multi User Shared Environment.

MUSH- Acronym- Multi User Shared Hallucination. Original source code is TinyMUSH created by Larry Foard.

MUX- Acronym- Multi User eXperience. Original source is TinyMUX credited to David Passmore.

OOC- Acronym- Out Of Character. Usually a channel you can speak on it denotes saying something outside the realm of roleplaying your character such as technical questions about stats or comments about the real world.

Penny- The unit of currency on most MUCKs. Can usually be found just lying around on the ground.

PK- Acronym- Player Killer. These are characters on MU*s that kill other player characters.

Player- The actual life form using the computer connected the the game. Interchangable with character.
