11/05/02 OK, time to
explain what's going on here and why
there hasn't been any updates coming out.
It's very simple, I just haven't got
enough time anymore. Also, motivation to
continue this work hasn't been very high
lately. But I haven't given up yet. So

02/26/02 Nascar TEX
problems figured out. There are two kinds
of TEX files, 8-bit and truecolor. GFE
only supports 8-bit textures. The demo
contained mostly 8-bit textures, but the
full version apparently has mostly
compressed truecolor textures (and
possibly the 8-bit files use a slightly
diffrent format). That's why they show up
completely black when trying to view
them. The truecolor textures seem to be
jpeg compressed, so maybe I can get this
fixed sometime soon..
The GFE project is not going anywhere
at the moment due to lack of time. Please
be patient. If everything goes well, some
bug fixes will be released in april and
some format additions in the summer.

problems here. For some reason I don't
receive any mails from Geocities or Yahoo

support for Red Faction VPP, Ghost Recon
and Black Thorn RSB images and Nascar
Heat TRK, RES and TEX textures (!).
Thanks to plug-ins coded by Compuart,
support for Kyrandia I & II & III
CPS images and COL palettes was also
added!
07/23/01 GFE 1.31. Added the
missing Terminator Rampage palette, fixed
some Blood RFF bugs and added Rages of
Mages RES files support.
07/20/01 I got an
email about the missing Terminator
Rampage palette (I couldn't answer
personally, because the email address
didn't work...). I don't have the palette
for Terminator Rampage textures, but as
soon as I can find it, I'll include it in
GFE or put it in the downloads section.
07/19/01 There's a
problem with Blood RFF files. Some of the
files inside the RFF resource files are
crypted and GFE won't extract them
correctly. This problem should be fixed
in the next version.

04/14/01 GFE 1.22. Added
some new formats (C&C MIX, CPS,
Warlords: Battlecry XCR, ...). There also
a new "save all stuff to this
folder" -option.
02/06/01 There won't
be any new GFE releases for a while,
because I'm adding some kind of plug-in
system and it's going to take some time.

01/15/01 GFE 1.2 is ready!
There's now support for Terminator:
Future Shock & Skynet textures (it
isn't perfect yet!), Nocturne and Blair
Witch 1&2 POD2 resource files.
01/04/01 GFE 1.1 is ready!
You can now view JPEGs and BMPs inside
PK3s without extracting them first (Quake
III Arena PK3, Star Trek: Elite Force
PK3, SWAT3 RES). Serious Sam Test Demo 1
& 2 had some great egypt textures, so
I added support for GRO and TEX too.
12/29/00 GFE 1.0 is finally
ready! ZIP file support was added, since
there are so many games that use zips
(Quake III PK3s, Vampire NOBs, ...).
There are still lots of improvements to
do and formats to add. I wish I had more
time!
There's a strange entry selection bug on
some NT machines. I'll try to fix it as
soon as I can, but it will be difficult
since I don't have NT myself. If you have
this problem, sending information about
your machine (version, etc.) to me would
be helpful!
11/17/00 GFE 0.9971. It's
a quick bug fix release. GFE 0.997 saved
only a part of a m8 file when extracting.
11/10/00 GFE 0.997 is
ready! I finally added support for Rise
of the Triad WADs. There's also a
"find entry" -function for
searching entries in big packages
containing thousands of files.
10/21/00 There's
another quite similar and very
interesting game resource file
viewer/ripper project. The viewer is
called rview and it's
completely written in Java. It opens
Dungeon Keeper 2 MPQs, Quake packs, Sin
textures and many other formats. Check it
out at: http://pluto.spaceports.com/~rview/!
Since it's a Java program, I'm hoping it
might support Quake III engine's PK3s,
Thief CRFs and Vampire NOBs (which all
are standard ZIPs) in the future.
10/20/00 The newest
version of GFE has some
"hidden" features that I
haven't documented. Age of Empires DRS
packages and The Longest Journey XARCs
can be opened, but the images they
contain can't be viewed (yet).
If there's no support for your
favourite format, you can always play
with the HFWN (Having Fun With Noise...)
and see if you could extract some images.
Press CTRL-V to start the HFWN. Warning:
it has bugs and may cause GFE to crash!
It works fine with Carnivores CARs, you
just need to set the image format to
"2 - 16-bit" and play a bit
with the offsets. It's quite silly and
clumsy, but I really use it sometimes...

format has changed, but that is not the
problem. All the images inside the pack

08/05/99 I finally
had a closer look at some of the
"support candidates".
- Corridor 7 - possible.
- Grim Fandango - The LAB files are
identical to Outlaws LAB files,
but their content is not. The MAT
and BM files which I suspect
contain the textures are not same
as Jedi Knight MAT or BM files.
This means that the existing
version of GFE opens Grim
Fandango LAB files, but nothing
else. Even the wave files are in
strange format. The MUS files
seem to be LABs too. Please note
that I have only tested the demo
version of Grim Fandango. Adding
support for this format is
possible.
- Terminator Rampage - possible
(but I don't know anything about
the quality of the textures since
the game wouldn't start on my
machine).
