Until about three years ago, Elerius was a lieutenant in the Fyrond Cavalry. He was an able leader, both militarily and personally. However, in a large battle with the forces of Iuz, he made a tactical error which resulted in the decimation of his unit.
The unit under his command was known as the Fighting Panthers. It was a specially designed unit, whose mission was both special operations and light strike force. During the Battle of the Snow Peaks, the Fighting Panthers were supposed to eliminate a group of catapults before a major strike by Fyrondi forces. Unfortunately, enemy forces, forewarned by a traitor in Fyrond, were waiting for the Panthers. In the brief battle which followed, Elerius' unit was surprised and decimated--all fifteen members of his unit were killed and Elerius himself was taken captive and held for two years.
After he was released, Elerius tried to return to the only life he ever knew--the Fyrond Cavalry. However, a minor noble family who lost a son under Elerius' command and who held Elerius responsible for their son's death, used their social and political influence to have Elerius removed from command. In a very public trial, Elerius was tried as a traitor to the Kingdom. Although he was found innocent of all charges, the damage was done to his reputation. Elerius resigned his commission and left the kingdom.
Since then, Elerius has been living in the Free City of Greyhawk, making a modest living as a hired sword. He has taken up gambling, almost to the point of addiction.
Elerius still holds himself responsible for the death of his companions. He has lost all confidence in his ability to lead troops, although not in his personal ability as a warrior. Her is very callous and not afraid to speak his mind.
He has several scars on his body, a tribute to two years of torture
and imprisonment at the hands of Iuz. He usually wears a black tunic
over his chainmail. He no longer uses any coat of arms, even when
jousting. He wears a black and red broach on his tunic as a tribute
to his fallen comrades.
