The Card of the Day is...

Death Speakers

Homelands Uncommon, 5th Edition Common
W Summon Speakers

1/1
"Protection from black."

A brief rundown of the card:

Simple enough of a card is Death Speakers. Any 1/1 creature with any kind of special ability for one mana is a good deal--it's a matter of putting it to good use to make it a great card. Death Speakers may be found as a sideboard card sometimes, but more often is found in decks containing the following:
  • Pestilence/Withering Wisps
For each black mana you pump into either of these cards, they'll deal a point of black damage to each player and creature except any that have protection from black. Death Speakers is the cheapest protection from black creature around making it perfect for a Pestilence deck.
  • Crypt Rats
Crypt Rats are like a walking Pestilence. All you'll need is a way to keep the Crypt Rats from killing themselves.
  • Cuombajj Witches
These witches are a cheaper, more durable Prodigal Sorcerer with a dangerous edge--every time you "ping" something with the witches, your opponent will get to shoot something of yours back. If you use all creatures that have protection from black, your opponent may be forced to shoot you---not so bad of a thing if your prepared for it.
  • Tainted Specter
This is almost like a Wand of Ith that can fly! Tainted Specter can be a great means of forcing an opponent to dicard, but at a potentially dangerous cost. If all of your creatures can withstand a point of damage or have protection from black, your army will live to have your Tainted Specter continue to force discards.
