3/3
"3: Sacrifice Coal Golem to add RRR to your mana pool. This ability is played as a mana source."
A brief rundown of the card:
What an odd card. An artifact creature that can produce red mana--interesting. It's not really powerful--being 3/3 for 5 mana. Coal Golem isn't a very efficient mana producer either--pay 5 colorless for 3 red. If only there were some ways to take advantage of the uniqueness of this card...:
While Enduring Renewal is in play, anytime one of your creatures goes to the graveyard from play, it will come back to your hand for nothing! With any combination of 5 Stone Calendars/Helm of Awakenings, a Coal Golem would be free to cast! Sacrifice your Coal Golem a few thousand times to get lots and lots of mana, then let loose with a 5,000 point Fireball. There are many other big direct damage spells you can use also. Take your pick.
Use any combination of 4 Stone Calendars/Helm of Awakenings (which lower the cost of all your spells by 1), to lower the casting cost of a Coal Golem to 1 generic mana and one black. Once you play a Coal Golem, you can sacrifice him to get 3 red mana. You can then cast Disturbed Burial (and buy it back) to retrieve the Coal Golem from the graveyard for only one black mana (thanks to the 4 Calendars/Helms). Any time you can switch 2 mana for 3 is very usefull. There are a few ways to convert that red mana you get to something else if need be. All you need is something to spend all that extra red mana on now!
This little trick will allow you to use Ball Lightnings in an all black deck. Try to discard the Coal Golem for something usefull, then cast Animate Dead on it. The red mana the Coal Golem can produce is perfect for casting Ball Lightning. A good complement to a fast black deck.
Let us not forget that our neat looking friend the Coal Golem is an artifact creature. We can make him 4/4 with just one Angelic Voices in play. Not too shabby for 5 mana.
