Remember to hit reload every day or else the new card may not load!
Not all of the old Card of the Day files are working right now. All of the old files should be running within one month. About 70-85% are working now. Sorry for the delays getting new cards done too. Things are getting back to normal rather well.
In this web page, I hope to present to you strategies, combos, and obscure uses for a new
Magic: The Gathering card every single day.
The Card of the Day is...
Colossus of Sardia
Antiquities, 4rth Edition, 5th Edition Rare
Artifact Creature
9/9
Trample
"Colossus of Sardia does not untap during your untap phase.
9: Untap Colossus of Sardia. Use this ability only during your upkeep."
A brief rundown of the card:
Yeah, that's more like it. 9/9 trample--one of the biggest. Sure, he is costly, but he is a steal for what you pay (you get what you pay for). In type 1 play, I've had the pleasure of dropping one of these fellows down on the 3rd turn a few times (you can do better than that, but it's really hard). Lets see...you block my Colossus with your Hypnotic Specter and your Erhnam Djinn. They both die, you take two, and the Colossus lives! Har har har. As much as I like this card, I don't think I've ever put 4 in a deck. I only use 3 in a deck built just for quick artifact mana (more on that later). 2 is a comfortable number to round out a deck with a few little and medium sized creatures. There's nothing worse than drawing 2 Colossi(?) in your open hand, then facing a deck with even a little land destruction. They just sit there laughing and taunting you. Here are some of the many uses for the popular Colossus of Sardia:
- Animate Dead/Necromancy/Resurrection...
These are many of the ways to craftily avoid the hefty casting cost the colossus. Most only cost 2-4 mana, making this combo quite a bargain even if you can't pay to untap this beast for a while. Heck, 9 trample damage in only one attack can win or cripple an opponent usually.
- Shallow Grave
If the idea of paying 9 mana to untap this nasty is not an option in your deck, Shallow Grave is for you. There has been a time or two I've Shallow Graved out a colossus to block. Nobody expects a 9/9 blocker out of nowhere!
- Mishra's Workshop+Candelabra of Tawnos
Just the Workshop is good enough (getting you 3 artifact mana per turn!), but combining it with the power of the Candelabra can field a colossus in no time.
- Urza's Mine/Power Plant/Tower
In every artifact deck should go 4 each of the Urza's lands. I love it when I get all 3 out on the 3rd turn in type 2 (not that big a deal in t1). If you can get all 3 of these out at one time, a colossus will be in your future very soon.
- Sol Ring/Mox Everything/Black Lotus/Fellwar Stone/Wild Growth...
There is quick mana for every type of deck made. Quick mana=quick colossus=dead opponent.
- Carrion/Sword of the Ages/Homarid Spawning Bed...
All of these spells and many more work great with huge, expensive creatures. Just so happens, Colossus of Sardia is one of the heftiest around. There are many effects you can net ranging from 9 token creatures to 9 damage to 9 mana to....
- Copy Artifact/Clone/Vesuvan Doppleganger...
Once you get a Colossus of Sardia in play, you can copy it cheaply with any of these fine spells. Why pay another 9 mana when you could pay 1U with Copy Artifact?
- Eternal Warrior/Instill Energy/Twiddle/Serra's Blessing...
The hefty cost of paying 9 mana to untap Colossus of Sardia can be avoided in many ways. Eternal Warrior and Serra's Blessing simply don't let the colossus tap when it attacks. Instill Energy and Twiddle allow you to untap the colossus for much less mana. This idea comes to us from Yan Zhang.
