The Card of the Day is...
Truce
Homelands, 5th Edition Rare
2W Instant
Each player may draw up to two cards. For each card less than two any player draws, that player gains 2 life.
Many player's first reaction to Truce is "But it does good things for my opponent too!" Juzam Djinn hurts you, and that doesn't stop people from giving an arm for one. Truce is a subtle card to be used with great care. White doesn't have many ways to speed up draws, Truce is one of few. Paying 3 mana for 2 cards isn't too bad of a deal in type 2. Truce can also be used just to gain 4 life, even though there are more efficient means of gaining life (Mangara's Blessing gets you 5 for the same mana, and won't "help" your opponent.) But let us instead think of the situations or deck ideas when you aren't going to care about your opponent drawing cards or gaining life OR the combos you can cook up that capatalize on your opponent having spare life/cards:
- Black Vise
If giving your opponent 4 life is insignificant for the ability to gain life/cards yourself, Black Vise is da bomb. There are many other cards that are fairly potent for all the more they cast because they let your opponent draw cards (Arcane Denial). This side-effect can easily be turned into a bad thing with Black Vise.
- Millstone/Howling Mine...
However you focus to try to run your opponent out of cards is up to you. Everyone has their own variants like Vexing Arcanix, Wand of Denial, yada yada. In almost all of those deck styles, you don't care if your opponent has 100 life or 2 life. You're trying to run them out of cards. This style of play makes Truce rather valuable and versatile. Your opponent will gain nothing of consequence or draw themselves two cards closer to death while you decide what combination of cards/life will wuit you best. Not bad for 2W!
- Mirror Universe/Psychic Transfer
Yuk yuk yuk! In the case of Mirror Universe, always take the cards and hope your opponent takes life. You'll net 2 cards and they're life +4 with a timely Mirror Universe. Truce can also help you be able to switch life totals with Psychich Transfer. What a whacky card that is.
