Chris' Magic: The Gathering Card of the Day!
November 7, 1997
The Card of the Day is...
Hyperion Blacksmith
Legends Uncommon
1RR Summon Smith
2/2 Tap: Tap or untap target artifact you do not control.
A brief rundown of the card:
Besides the obvious defense against artifact creatures and harmful artifacts (Black Vise, Winter Orb...), Hypeion Blacksmith has far more sinister potential if used carefully. Here are a few tricks you can try with Hyperion Blacksmith:
- Siezures+Thran Forge/Ashnod's Transmorgrant.
Make an opponent's creature an artifact creature with Thran Forge or Ashnod's Transmorgrant. You can then place Siezures on your opponent's newly made artifact creature, and tap it at least once a turn.
- Relic Bind
This simple combo will fetch you a life, OR deal a point of damage to an opponent every turn without having to pay mana once the combo is in play. Not bad at all.
- Powerleech
This works a little better than Relic Bind in that you choose a target player when Powerleech is cast, not a target artifact. Any of the target players artifacts are affected, but you can only gain life with Powerleech.
- Haunting Wind
Any time any artifact is tapped (or it's activation cost payed), Haunting Wind deals a point of damage to the artifact's controller. Just make sure your opponent is using artifacts and make even more sure that you do not.
- Artifact Possession
Artifact Possession and Hyperion Blacksmith work just like Psychic Venom and Icy Manipulator. Two points of damage a turn without having to pay mana once the cards are in place is really good.
