Chris' Magic: The Gathering Card of the Day!
November 9, 1997
The Card of the Day is...
Dwarven Nomad
Mirage Common
2R Summon Dwarf
1/1 Tap: Target creature with poewr 2 or less is unblockable this turn.
A brief rundown of the card:
Dwarven Nomad and Dwarven Warriors will hopefully forever be in the basic set of Magic cards. This is a good example of a card that can have a very potent effect when used in conjuction with a plethora of "combo cards", but it is not useless if a "combo card" is not in play--you'll still have a 1/1 creature. Here are some examples of creatures you can use with Dwarven Nomads...I can't list them all:
- Hypnotic Specter
It's no wonder this thing was banned from Extended play. If your Hypnotic Specter seems to have problems sneaking past your opponent's flyers, use the Dwarven Nomad to slip him by. 2 damage and forcing your opponent to discard at random every turn is good even in a two card combo.
- Zebra Unicorn
Make a Zebra Unicorn unblockable to net gain 2 life while your opponent takes 2 damage. It's almost like a mini-drain life every turn!
- Coral Fighters
If you can sneak Coral Fighters past your opponent's blockers, you get to choose if the top card on your opponent's library will either be placed on the bottom of your opponent's library, or if the top card will stay right where it's at. Make sure to tell your opponent what card you put on the bottom to spite them--"Let me see---Jester's Cap...that goes on the bottom"
- Suq'Ata Assassin/Swamp Mosquito
A guaranteed poison counter every turn for your opponent if you can pull this off. Your opponent can even prevent these creature's damage and they will still get a poison counter. All that matters to the Swamp Mosquito and the Suq'Ata Assassin is if they are not blocked.
- Pygmy Hippo+Iceburg
You get to Drain Power your opponent every turn (after combat) by making the Pygmy Hippo unblockable. You can then store the mana you steal in Iceburg, or use it in any of a few dozen other ways before the end of your turn.
Editor's Note: There are so many combos with Dwarven Nomads, I'm not going to be able to brush on them all tonight. I will include more (no repeats I promise!) when I do Dwarven Warriors.
