Chris' Magic: The Gathering Card of the Day!
November 12, 1997
The Card of the Day is...
Goblin Tinkerer
Mirage Common
1R Summon Goblin
1/2 R, Tap: Destroy target artifact. That artifact deals an amount of damage equal to its casting cost to Goblin Tinkerer.
A brief rundown of the card:
Very interesting is the Goblin Tinkerer. He's almost like a Shatter just waiting to happen. If your opponent is unable to directly dispose of the Goblin Tinkerer, you should play him early and just let him sit there---using him as an intimidation if nothing else. Only play one at a time if you are playing a waiting game. Wait for your opponent to get 2 of whatever artifact they need to play--they will play the first one, expecting you to blow it up with the Tinkerer. Do so. Right after they play the second artifact, put down another Goblin Tinkerer and blow up the second. Here are a few cards that work really well with our curious goblin:
- Sacred Boon
Have your Goblin Tinkerer take apart such choice artifacts as Jester's Masks, Grinning Totems, and Jaymdae Tomes. Prevent up to 3 damage to the Tinkerer when he blows something up (he can already take 1 without dying). Your goblin will become 1/5 if he eats a 4 casting cost artifact--making it safe for him to blow up all the Masks and Totems he wants.
- Scars of the Veteran
Just like the above card, except you can prevent up to 7 points of damage to our Goblin Tinkerer---potentially making him 1/9 in the process! Go after such monster artifacts like Aladdin's Ring and Mishra's War Machine. Soon your Goblin Tinkerer will be able to disassemble almost every artifact in the game without threat of dying.
- Artifact Ward
Make the Goblin Tinkerer unable to be harmed by artifacts! The artifacts he blows up deal the damage to him--with Artifact Ward, all damage from artifact sources is reduced to 0. All you need now is a way to make non-artifacts into artifacts....:
- Ashnod's Transmorgrant/Thran Forge
If your opponent has no targets for your Goblin Tinkerer, make some with either of these fine cards.
