In this web page, I hope to present to you strategies, combos, and obscure uses for a new
Magic: The Gathering card every single day.
The Card of the Day is...
Betrayal
Visions Common
U Enchant Creature
"Play only on a creature an opponent controls. If enchanted creature becomes tapped, draw a card."
A brief rundown of the card:
Blue is starting to amass quite a few cheap defensive creature enchantment cards nowadays. Along with Apathy, Backfire, and Mana Chains, blue can now hold it's own against a quick horde of creatures fairly well. I've found many opponents don't hesitate to keep attacking--letting you draw a card every turn. Sometimes, this is better than forcing a creature to not attack with Betrayal. Here are some spiffy combos with Betrayal:
- Icy Manipulator/Puppet Strings+Jangling Automaton...
The Icy and Puppet Strings are some of the cheapest means of continually tapping an opponent's creature every turn. If you add Jangling Automaton (a huge 3/2 for only 3 mana), all of your opponent's creatures would untap when it attacks. Simply tap a Betrayed creature again with a second Icy/Puppet strings for another card AND help clear the way for your 3/2 attacker!
- Juxtapose/Control Magic...
It is always much easier to tap your own creatures many times in a turn than it is to tap an opponents. But we can't cast Betrayal on our own creature....hmmmm...but we can place it on an opponent's creature that we take from them with any of the fine creature-stealer enchantments there are. There are so many ways to keep tapping/untapping one of your own creatures, I'm not going to get into them tonight.
- Ivory Tower/Thumbscrews/Library of Alexandria...
Make your opponent suffer even more for letting you draw cards by using cards that are particularly beneficial when you have a full hand. They'll be much more hesitant if an extra card would net you an extra life, or a point of damage to themselves!
- Thundermare
Make Thundermare even more powerfull by netting a card when he comes into play (as if it needs to be any better).
