The Card of the Day is...
Derelor
Fallen Empires, 5th Edition Rare
3B Summon Thrull
4/4
"Your black spells cost an additional B to play."
A brief rundown of the card:
Can you say "black Ernham Djinn"? That's what Derelor amounts to in the right hands. Often seen in quick creature decks with other heavy hitters like Phyrexian War Beast and Rouge Elephant, Derelor is one of the safest, quickest unboltable meanies out there. Derelor's shortcoming (black spells costing an extra B) can be overcome easily in a few ways. One way is to play with lots of small creatures--who cares if once you can produce 4 mana per turn if your Vampire Bats cost 2 black to cast? Here are some other ways of getting the most out of Derelor:
- Elves of the Deep Shadow
Put Derelor in an almost all green deck, and use Elves of the Deep Shadow to produce the black mana necessary to summon Derelor. It's not a big deal if your black spells cost an extra mana if almost every spell in your deck is not black!
- Black Mana Battery/Bottomless Vault
These black mana storage devices work well with Derelor. After a few turns of accumilating counters, you should have enough extra mana around to cover Derelor's extra cost.
- Juxtapose/Legerdemain/Guantlets of Chaos+Slight of Mind/Mind Bend
This is downright rude. Give your opponent your Derelor with any of the fine "creature swapping" cards, then Slight or Bend the word black on Derelor to whatever color your opponent is using. For example, can you imagine the utter frustration your opponent would have casting blue spells in an all blue deck when they have a Derelor that makes their blue spells cost an extra black to cast? HAHAHA. They probably won't be able to cast an entire color's worth of cards in their deck. Not bad at all.
- Soul Exchange/Ebon Praetor/Tourach's Gate
Let us not forget that Derelor is a thrull, and does have innate uses being a thrull with the aforementioned cards.
