The Card of the Day is...
Snowfall
Ice Age Common {In celebration of Christmas}
2U Enchantment
"Cumulative upkeep U
Islands may produce an additional U when tapped for mana. This mana is usable only for cumulative upkeep.
Snow-covered islands may produce either an additional UU or an additional U when tapped for mana. This mana is usable only for cumulative upkeep."
A brief rundown of the card:
Snowfall is often the butt of many a joke. It is has been said many a time that Snowfall's mana bonus only pays for itself. I disagree. Being of limited use, Snowfall is not for every deck--in fact I feel it's almost gotta have a deck built around it. To get the most out of Snowfall, you must play with all snow-covered islands and tons of cards with big cumulative upkeeps, but I feel there are enough of them to make a "cool" deck. Here's some cards to try with Snowfall:
- Reality Twist
Reality Twist completely hoses most single color decks (and quite a few multi-colored ones) while it doesn't affect islands at all. It'll make all basic land types but islands produce a color of mana other than what they should--perfect in an all blue deck. Reality Twist does have one of the nastiest cumulative upkeeps in the game though. Snowfall will let you pay for each turn of Reality Twist with but the tapping of one extra island a turn instead of three (cumulative).
- Mystic Remora
Mystic Remora is not a bad way to draw tons of cards in the mid-point of a game, but you may need some extra mana to play the newly drawn cards. Snowfall will allow you to not tie up all of your resources paying the upkeep to fill your hand with the Mystic Remora.
- Mystic Might
Without any kind of assistance, Mystic Might isn't too popular. Snowfall will help you keep your Mystic Might (or shall I say mini-Giant Growth every turn) for several turns. Think, how much BLUE mana is it worth to pump up creatures? It is a very handy tool, not that hard to pull off. Any time you can force a color to perform well in a manner it's not supposed to, you got yourself a deck! Pumping up creatures with blue mana fits into this category for sure.
- Illusionary Wall+Animate Wall
The king of walls can polish off most opponents in just a few turns. An animated Illusionary Wall will kill virtually every creature in Magic unaltered AND LIVE except for maybe Cockatrice (on attack). WOW!!! Mmmmmm 7/4 flying first strike....Ahhhh. Nicol Bolis--stand aside. Sunweb--not a problem.
- Ancestral Knowledge
This is an awesome card to get choice cards in your hand quickly, but it can get hard to pay the upkeep really fast. Yes, Snowfall is not a bad option.
