The Card of the Day is...
Mole Worms
Ice Age, 5th Edition Uncommon
2B Summon Worms
1/1
"You may choose not to untap Mole Worms during your untap phase.
T: Tap target land. As long as Mole Worms remains tapped, that land does not untap during its controller's untap phase."
A brief rundown of the card:
The nice thing about Mole Worms is you don't have to worry about maintainence most of the time--you find a good opponent's land like Maze of Ith or Kjeldoran Outpost, tap it and keep it tapped, and forget about the Mole Worms (and their pesky land) for the rest of the game. There are better ways to tap lands than Mole Worms (under most circumstances). There are also far more damaging creatures around than a 1/1 for 2 generic+1 black. Getting both of these put together in one card is pretty handy--allow me to show you why:
- Elder Druid/Puppet Strings...
Shutting down one land of an opponent every turn isn't too bad. Keeping them from effectively using 2 lands at key times can help win many games. Even if you untap a Mole Worms that alreay tapped a land, the land doesn't automatically untap along with it---the land has to wait until it's controllers next untap phase for that. If you can pull this off during your opponent's upkeep, you'll be able to have 2 of their lands tapped when their main phase rolls around. Elder Druid and Puppet Strings are two of the more popular non-enchantment means of untapping creatures. Of course, the local enchantments work much better:
- Nature's Chosen/Instill Energy...
This will have the same end result as above, but costs plenty less to use. The downside to this is these enchantments may have little use in your deck on their own--on the other hand it's pretty rare when an Elder Druid or Puppet Strings will do you NO good at all.
- Pyschic Venom
Mole Worms works about as well as many other means of tapping lands when it comes to Pyschic Venom. Pyschic Venom can be really brutal if you can find a bunch of ways to keep tapping+untapping an opponent's land.
- Kudzu+Enchantment Alteration
Just in case your opponent tries waiting for a Disenchant to pop up instead of using a Kudzu'ed land, use your Mole Worms to hurry up that land's destruction. Once Kudzu is on one of your own lands, use Enchantment Alteration to send it back to your opponent. Hot potatoe!
