The Card of the Day is...
Tornado
Alliances Rare
4G Enchantment
"Cumulative upkeep G
2G: Pay 3 life for each velocity counter on Tornado. Destroy target permanent and put a velocity counter on Tornado. Use this ability only once each turn. Effects that prevent or redirect damage cannot be used to counter this loss of life."
If you can get past the "BS" involved with this card, it can be turned into a reusable cheaper version of Desert Twister. Even though the twister is a little expensive, it's saved my life dozens of times. The amount of times Tornado has saved my butt is almost countless. If nothing else, you should look at Tornado as a sort of echo version of Desert Twister. You can blow up any one permanent during the upkeep of the turn after you bring out Tornado. Remember, you don't loose 3 life for the first card you blow up...just the later ones when you've got some velocity counters laying around. Here are some combos to make Tornado a little more managable:
- Skull of Orm
Oh yeah, this is great! Just don't pay the upkeep on Tornado after you've used it once. It'll go to the graveyard, use the Skull of Orm to get it back to your hand, and repeat until your opponent is out of permanents. OK, OK, this is a fairly slow and very expensive combo, but the result is fearsome. I've personally won quite a few games thanks to this combo. It's great for big multiplayer games.
- Giant Fan
I can't extoll the virtues of Giant Fan in my lifetime. I only touched on the possibilities of Giant Fan in two Card of the Day articles. Just one of the great things you can do with Giant Fan is move the foul velocity counters from Tornado onto something a little more practical like a Thorn Thallid. Just getting rid of the velocity counters is good enough anyway in my book.
- Boomerang/Time Elemental/Obelisk of Undoing...
Instead of returning a used Tornado from your graveyard, you can send the Tornado back to your hand to shake off all those nasty velocity counters.
