Borrum Binbalik

Greetings Curious Adventurer! Or perhaps Learned Scholar? For any number of reasons, some need that you sought to fulfill has brought you to this work. Many other Name-givers will never read this tome yet you were drawn here. It is for this reason that King Varulus III, Passions bless him, and now King Neden have sent the scholars of the Great Library across Barsaive ever since the opening of the Gates of Throal. Any small bit of information might one day play a pivotal role in the shaping of Barsaive. Some key knowledge might unlock the fabulous powers of an item or help find our many lost legacies, taken from us by the Scourge.

In Borrum, 1507, King Varulus sent another round of scholars roaming across the land. I had mixed feelings about this. I was born in the month of Borrum, and my father was killed while travelling to join my mother for the occasion. My mother then broke Throalic tradition by Naming me Borrum, in memory of the month that so radically changed our lives forever. Since then, I have always been wary of the month as momentous change does not sit well with me. My assignment was to travel to Landis, and chronicle the attempts of adventurers who explore the many breached and lost kaers there. My travelling companion, Kolovon Ligasmu, was the Senior Scholar on this trip. A decent fellow, his presence gave me hope that our mission might get off to a good start.

Which is what I was thinking about when I found myself sitting in northwestern Barsaive in Gahmil the next year. The story of how we found ourselves there can be told another time. Suffice to say, though, neither of us was happy. At the end of the month, we settled into a town Named Tureem to celebrate the five-day holiday. The townsfolk, however, had made no preparations nor did they look festive. When we inquired, it was discovered that some adepts had been responsible for a large number of villager deaths while fighting a Horror. The two hard facts that we received were a pamphlet describing the actions of one of the members, Rokk Krinn, and that the group's obsidiman collegue had died.

Both Scholar Ligasmu and myself decided that this was a story worth chronicling. We discovered where the nearest Liferock was and went there. Sure enough, the Ritual of ReEmergence was already underway. We found Rokk Krinn, and the rest of the group later to be known as the Bearers of Akasha. After travelling with them for two weeks, we were seperated by the Iopan/Ishkarat takeover of a small village Named Gevin and the group's attempts to smuggle the deposed leaders to safety.

We did not cross paths with them again until Riag, 1508 when King Varulus decreed that a work on the group be commissioned, most likely in appreciation of their rescue of his son from Vistrosh. Scholar Ligasmu was appointed Chief Editor of the work. My assignment was to compile personal information on the group and those associated with them, complete with interviews. To properly attend to the tasks at hand, I employed the services of Caarad Surestrider and Lavrup Green-tongued.

To date, the research we have only proves what many average Name-givers have trouble realizing - a Named group is not born on the day of their ceremony. It takes form long before then, and many times is much different than the group that started the walk toward that destination. Such is the case with the Bearers of Akasha.

The origins of the group lie in Bryhn, a small village in northwest Barsaive. The original members, Gort, Dag, Chamberlain, Killian the Red and Midnight Blue, were adepts of the town hired by their elders to participate in Varulus' great communications endeavour. For those of you who do not know, the King's Diplomatic Corps sent representatives to villages throughout Barsaive. They left a gold coin that was capable of sending limited messages to Throal. To foster goodwill and trade, a second coin for Throal was to be brought back by a group representing that village. The Bryhn adepts were that group.

It was the influence of the Corinthian, a Horror-construct, that was the catalyst of transition from a group of local adepts to the feared Bearers of Akasha. During the time leading up to their final confrontation with the Corinthian in Viln, the party changed shape drastically. Gort and Chamberlain were slain, while Killian and Dag left for their own reasons. By the time the adepts arrived in Viln, Midnight Blue, perhaps the least attached to Bryhn, was the only original member left. Through their many changes, a group of Name-givers that might normally have drifted apart was forged into a united party by the threat of the Corinthian. Indeed, the Bearers themselves acknowledge that their group was born on 6 Sollus, 1508 with their fight and slaying of the Corinthian. The group at that time was Briana, Sanjuro, Maxwell, Akasha, Midnight Blue, Garnel and Tural. Of those adepts, Tural left to continue his mercenary career. The rest formed the Named Bearers of Akasha, save the sickly Akasha who is their inspiration.

The group did not refer to themselves by that Name until much later. In fact, they did not even seriously address the issue of a Named group. The catalyst for that next step was their association with the windling Mal. The story of Mal and the Bearers is told throughout their journals and letters. Their attempt to deal with the windling led to their own affirmation of trust for each other, and their desire to be part of the same group. Their exile of Mal on 30 Teayu 1508, although a difficult experience, was their first conscious step toward dealing with an adverse situation as a group dedicated to the same goals. Indeed, they began to refer to themselves as the Bearers of Akasha almost immediately after that.

After the traumatic River Pearl incident on 22 Borrum, 1508, the future of the group was uncertain. With the party scattered in every direction, each member gave serious thought to the feasibility of a Named group. In the end, the surprise return of Midnight Blue strengthened their resolve and decided their course of action. The Bearers' intent was to swear their oath in Viln, the place of their greatest victory. The group at the time was Garnel, Briana, Sanjuro and Midnight Blue. However, an attack by the Elite in Kratas left them in a desperate situation. Faced with the possibility of being seperated again, the Bearers swore their oath outside the walls of Kratas on 23 Strassa, 1509. Amazingly enough, this was but a prelude for momentous events to come. Those events are recorded in this tome, with the skill and completeness you have come to expect from the Great Library of Throal.
