Bearers of Akasha
Garnel, windscout

From the notes of Caarad Surestrider, submitted to Borrum Binbalik for his work "On the Bearers of Akasha"

On the edge of the table in front of me sat a windling in battered hide armor, his right eye crystal and his left green. He seemed to be carrying nothing but an empty silken puch (or sack from his perspective), rolled up and tied around his waist so that it rested in the small of his back. Black leather bracers covered his forearms, but a bulge under the right one hinted at something else present as well. A mischevious grin from a windling can sometimes be as devastating as a battle bellow from a particularly angry sky raider. After checking to make sure my laces were tied to the right boots, I looked at Garnel again. He had a self-confident posture and honest gaze that would put me to ease as I advance. As I drew near, my attention was drawn to a necklace of intricate wooden beads he wears, one of which he absently rolls between his fingers as he indicates a chair nearby.

"Ah, well met, friend! I am Garnel, windscout and a dabbler in the study of the elements. Sit and stay awhile, though I doubt you could leave for several minutes at least." (At this point, I noticed that my pants were stuck to the chair - C.S.)

"I guess you could call me leader of this little group, if one could even be chosen. Blue is the oldest party member, but shows no interest in leadership. Or it may be due to the fact that he tends to terrify everyone we meet. But he's not that bad once you get to know him. As second oldest, the others seem to look up to me, at least when I am flying overhead. You could say I am also the most well-known, due in no small part to that little incident in the Blood Wood. But let's not get into that, except to say that I still cringe at the sight of hand-held mirrors, and uncomfortable that every blood elf I meet seems to laugh when he finds out who I am.

"But back to the Bearers! It is a varied group I travel with, to be sure, and each has changed much in the time I have known them. They have become as family to me, and this even includes a 'black sheep', if you will. I'll let you speculate over who that might be...

"However, you have ample opportunity to speak to each of them, so allow me to tell you about myself. I started out what seems so long ago as an idealistic youth inspired by the legends my aunt told us about the world and heroic deeds. But Aunt Glenowyn failed to mention that heroism doesn't pay much, especially if you are a lone windling. So I ended up hunting down bounties in order to eat. During one such hunt, I was teamed with Rokk Krinn, the Ork of Legend. We ran into the original party of adepts, of whom Blue is the last member. Our paths led in the same direction, so we decided to accompany them.

"We soon became incorporated into the group, and I found that good deeds can pay, at least enough to get by on, and that hunger is easier to endure with companions. We soon made a name for ourselves, although we haven't yet Named ourselves. It is really amazing once you become a legend, even a minor one, you end up meeting important, or at least visible, people like kings. Unfortunately, this makes you more visible as well, and everything you do has consequences. Which is why, in revealing the cover-up of the old king's death, we fell into disfavor and were evicted from our quarters in Throal. Because we made the new king look bad. Never mind the fact that we saved his life a few months earlier. Apparently his memory for good is short, but I'll bet that he remembers the bad things until his last breath.

"But I cannot let one man's ego keep me from doing what is right for myself and for Barsaive. We honor our fallen comrades, Naming ourselves for one and remembering the lessons and stories of the others, and continuing to fight to free our home from Horrors and Iopans which I 'm not really sure are actually separate entities...but, oh well..."

At that moment, Garnel's face clouded over as if he had just remembered something important. Without another word, he flew away. Thankfully, his spell had worn off and I was able to leave. Alas, I was stuck with the tab.
