"Since we were all together, we decided that this was a good time to address the Mal issue...I hope he frees his love someday, and will miss him. I think it was totally unnecessary for him to be kicked out."
-from the journals of Garnel
"We parted ways with Mal today. I hate to admit it, but I don't think anyone (save Mal) was truly upset about it. Garnel made a valiant effort to prevent damage to Mal's legend, but we had no intention of doing him harm. It's a matter best left unopened again."
-from the journals of Briana
Considered the last difficult internal struggle navigated by the Bearers before they swore their Oaths as a group, the exile of Mal easily remained the most undocumented event for us to record. This task was made all the more difficult (as noted in the words written by Briana) because for the Bearers and those knowledgable about the situation, it was considered an old memory not to be revisited. Despite our best attempts, Mal remained beyond the abilities of our scholars to find for some time, and when he was finally uncovered by Lavrup Green-tongued in 1510, he refused to discuss the matter. Likewise, while side notes, letters and certain passages shed some light into the chronology of the situation, nothing exists outside of the sole entries in Briana and Garnel's diaries discussing the actual event of the exile and its ramifications. At the time of this writing, 4 Riag, 1511, two breakthroughs have granted us insight into this matter. The first breakthrough, in its way a sort of epilogue to this tome, is news of a Promise Kept. When exiling Mal, the Bearers promised him that one day they would aid him in destroying the Horror Rakish, who possessed Mal's lifemate, R'kohkim, many years ago, prompting the blood scars that caused so much consternation within the group. Brakish was also noted for terrorizing the area around the Cliff City of House Syrtis. Apparently, this promise has now been fulfilled, although the fate of R'kohkim is not yet known. The second breakthrough is the partial recovery of the journals of Maxwell Highcliffe. Although we are lucky enough to have the early parts of Maxwell's journals, most of his notes during the pre-Shis'r'tal period of the Bearers was lost during his time as a member of Scavia’s Protectors. However, Vardin Silvertongue noticed that small remnants of a tattered journal imported from the region of Scavia are indeed portions of those lost works. One of the rare pieces recovered is a whole portion of Maxwell's journal discussing the exile, and his thoughts on why it had to happen. It proved to be a detailed account and insight into the reasoning behind the decision. My gratitude to Vardin Silvertongue for again demonstrating his high degree of vigilence.
