Adventuring Journal of Mal

Windling of Exile

My name is Mal. I’m a windling, originally from the Delaris Mountains. No, there isn’t a great windling population there, and because of the unnatural silence of the Delaris, we never really bothered to give ourselves a Name. No, I have no mate--I was always more interested in exploring than settling down (not to mention the ratio between windling genders). I’m thirty eight years old, and have been traveling abroad in Barsaive for just over seven years now.

Maybe ‘abroad’ is too loose a term. I really only found my way into the Liaj before I decided that it was so interesting that I couldn’t possibly leave before exploring it. But it was so big, and exciting! There are elves in there, and humans, too, and none of them wanted anything to do with outsiders. So naturally I had to learn to watch from a distance (no mean feat for a windling attention span, mind) and learn how to affiliate with the animals the way some of them could. That was how I met Neghri--the first beast I bonded with. Since then we go everywhere together. I took him back home to the Delaris a couple of times, to talk about what I’ve seen, and each time my tribe was smaller and smaller. I’m sure in a few years I won’t have a tribe to go back to--it’s a harsh life in the Mountains.

Recently I decided that I knew everything I was going to learn from the tribe in the Liaj, so Neghri and I set off to the east. I’d had a taste of the mountains and the jungle, and decided the next new thing was the Serpent River. I had actually only been on the Serpent for a few weeks before the events chronicled in this journal took place.

We've taken aboard new security this voyage - probably had something to do with the copious amounts of ale that vanished under the watch of the old security. They're actually someone of note this time -apparently the captain has leared from his old errors.

They seem interesting enough, I suppose, but their personalities don't exactly shine as their reputations do. The human, Maxwell, is a prime example. Upon my introduction to them by the captain he was the first to mock my name, then he promptly complained throughout the whole watch setup, whining about his lack of time to study. Eventually his teammates, even the sleeping Akasha, I could tell - got frustrated and gave him one watch.

Then there is the t'skrang, Sanjuro. He seems very serious, almost too serious, but once in a while his dramatic flare comes out, when he is making speeches. Those are the moments when one can hold out the most hope for him.

And the elf, Briana. I just like her. She's nice. And she's got this eagle, Henning. I'd love to let Neghri play with him, but I don't think it's a good idea while we're on duty. Maybe once we've docked and we're reloading to make the trip back up the river. Of course, Neghri could take Henning any day.

There is also the nethermancer, Blue. He's quiet, seems nice enough. I don't see him much, though, so I really couldn't say. And Akasha and Garnel (another windling!), but all the two of them do is sleep. If something happens not during their watch I doubt we could rouse them in time.

But they're leaving at the end of the voyage, bound for Kratas, so I doubt I'll get to know them very well.

Boarded today. Paid the toll. Went on our way. Maxwell whined.

49/1

Saw some jungle t'skrang. If only they weren't so skittish! I'd love to meet one. Sanjuro told us a bit about them, and I feel kind of bad for the fact that they're forced to exist that way, hiding and unable to explore freely.

49/2

Lots today. We made the usual four mile hike into the jungle to deliver the goods. Some of the t'skrang from the boat came with us (us being me and Neghri, Sanjuro, Briana and Maxwell), hauling the barrels of fish in which the real treasures were hidden. About halfway into the walk we noticed that we were being followed by something. It wasn't threatening us just yet, so to everyone's credit it was decided to let it be.

And then we saw a second something come out from the forest ahead of us. Briana recognized it as a Brithin. It did its little ritual challenge dance to Briana and they were about to engage in a battle between the two of them when Sanjuro, the big clod, came in and bashed it over the head, killing it. That was when the first Brithin came out of the woods and attacked from behind. Naturally it would. It hurt one of the t'skrang crew members. So I commanded it to leave and it started to, but had to yell at Maxwell not to tick it off any further, as he was bound to do.

The threat was neutralized when the Heroes of Legend decided to annihilate it. Idiots. Maxwell trapped the Brithin in vines and Sanjuro and Briana took it upon themselves to club that one over the head too, killing it. I tried again to sent it away, to save its life, before that, but it didn't work - the animal was too incensed.

Their reasoning behind this little hack and slash escapade was that it might be lying in wait for them when we returned along the same path. Why can't people understand that animals don't hold grudges as Name-Givers do? The Brithin wouldn't have been there, and if it had it would proabably have stayed with the body of the other, so long as we didn't get too near. Heroes of Legend my eye!

Briana brought up a good point, though - cubs. One of the dead Brithins was male and the other female. However, we agreed to look on the way back.

So we continued on our way to the village, and once we were there we were ambushed. T'skrang, humans, and an Illusionist. We managed to kill them all but for the Illusionist, whom we captured. I wish I knew what we have been carrying in those barrels.

On the other hand, I know now why Maxwell has the odd name that he does. His name actually used to be Max, but every time these jesters entered a battle it would take one hit before he was down. His allies would start to call to him for aid, "Max..", see him down and useless on the ground, "Well...never mind", and leave him.

After today, I consider myself fortunate in the respect that I'm only serving one voyage with them. I don't believe that I could join them and put up with their antics for long.

We made our way back to the ship, toting our hostages and the weapons. That's one of the great things about being as small as I am--you don't usually wind up getting stuck with carrying anything. But once we reached the Serpent, things were not as we had left them. Briana noticed a ship to the north, burning, and started running towards it. I saw not only that smoke, but smoke to the northeast and east southeast. Once everyone was at the ship to the north, we realized that it wasn't the Amelius. I told everyone about the smoke columns, but they didn't care.

So, being naturally curious while everyone else stood around and argued, Neghri and I took off to the column to the northeast, over the Sea of Reeds. What destruction I saw there! It must have been exciting to watch, but as it was, there were a few burned bodies, and one dead of a windling arrow--K'Tenshin. I took the arrow and the K'Tenshin's earring and, deciding there was nothing else to see, we headed back.

When I got there, Sanjuro berated me for not telling anyone where I was going. It wasn't as if they could have followed me! And, in any case, I told them what I had discovered, but they hadn't listened to me. Honestly, he can be just as trying as Maxwell in his own way. But the others had already met up with the sleeping Akasha, as well as Garnel and Blue, who had apparently caused the destruction that I saw, so it was all explained away rather nicely. But neither of the ships I had seen before were the Amelius, which was safe and ready to take us to the final stop.

On the way, they interrogated the prisoners individually. I have no idea what they said, but Sanjuro didn't seem too happy after he came out of the room where they questioned the Illusionist. Apparently he was a little too smug.

We have three days until we reach the final stop and the Heroes of Legend leave.

Neghri's healed up nicely.

49/5

Interesting--and long--day. We reached Kratas and while I watched the Heroes try to leave, a slew of people tried to get on board the ship. I'm not exactly sure why, but they all wanted to leave the town. Eventually the people got on and the Heroes got off and as I waved goodbye Sanjuro, as an afterthought, asked if I would come along. Maxwell sneered something about Neghri which I'm glad, for his sake, I didn't catch, but I decided to go with them anyway. Neghri and I needed a change of scenery, and the captain assured me that hecould get along without security.

So we found an inn (I stayed up out of the way so my money wouldn't get stolen in the Thief Town) and Briana in particular immediately began asking about this Rokk Krinn, which these people insist upon following with the title, "Ork of Legend". Still not quite sure I've heard of him, but life with these people doesn't strike me as boring, so I'm going along with it. Of course, if anything happens to Neghri, there'll be hell to pay . . . .

It turned out Rokk was hiring people for work in the Delaris Mountains. It's a small world after all, huh? We spent the rest of the night searching for Rokk and people who knew about him, but didn't really get anything except that he headed south. Briana ran off early on in the night. Maxwell had me track a pattern that he found (I've heard strange things about him - first little stone boys and now he had me following this little girl .. . .), and I led him to an ork home where he immediately tried to bravo his way into. Naturally, it didn't work. Whoever the ork was, he was very pro-ork and anti-everybody else.

When we reached the others, Briana returned. I noticed Sanjuro didn't berate *her* for leaving without telling anyone where she was going. We met with some guy who told us that he would tell us where Rokk is if we would help rescue some Throalic ambassador. Tomorrow, we're off to battle. He introduced us to a new member of the party--a human archer. She seems nice, but all she's said is "Yo!" Her name's Miranda.

At least, it seems that that was more or less what happened. I was starting to fall asleep by the end of it. After all, it's not easy obeying all those commands: "Mal, fly up and scout ahead", "Mal, go check for an ambush", "Why don't you fly upwards and follow that person and check out the land, Mal?", "Mal, track this". Glad to know I'm being of use, I guess, but it's not all that comforting to know that they're more interested in giving orders than thinking of me as a person. Still, I don't see how this situation can last - if they keep doing this, I can always leave and find something else to entertain myself with.

Maybe I'll go find Rokk and tell him that his old friends have been Horror-marked and to flee from them at any chance they get . . .

Naturally, I wouldn't do that, but it still puts a smile on my face to think of Sanjuro's expression.

50/1

Today I realized something very important. I'm never leaving Neghri behind again. We planned for the assault on the colosseum. Or perhaps I should say, Sanjuro and Briana planned for the assault on the colosseum. I've never had much of a mind for planning things like that. Apparently, neither did the rest of the group. Eventually, though, a plan was arrived at.

The first part of it was to get the password from a Theran guard. Miranda, Blue, and I all went to a bar near the colosseum to try and convince one of them to tell it to us. It took about thirty minutes or so and some strange tactics on Blue's part, but we managed to get a drunken troll alone in a building with us. Or alone with Miranda and Blue, anyway, because as soon as I shut the door behind us it was "Mal, go find something for the troll to drink"--also known as "Mal, go stand guard and watch for trouble." Some things just don't change.

I wasn't really upset to be leaving though, for one reason. I didn't want to see Blue do whatever he did. So I just listened, and got the password - "Imperial grubs are scum". Highly creative. But it didn't seem like Blue had to scare him to do it, because I didn't hear anything along those lines, and no one looked particularly afraid when they came out.

I went with the others back to the building we were using as a base, excited mostly to see Neghri again (I know it had only been half an hour, but it's not easy), and while I was getting him ready to go with us to the colosseum, I told him the password. It's a good thing I'd listened because neither Blue nor Miranda remembered it. But it was then that Sanjuro told me that he wouldn't allow Neghri along with us! After what we'd just done! Reluctantly I agreed, and left him to guard with the dwarfs while Garnel and I went out to make sure that Vistroth was leaving.

I figured that the blood elf would be leaving through the main gate, but I wanted to watch the rear gate anyway. That's where the bestiary was. I heard all the poor hungry, hurt, fearful animals, and I knew then that I would have to help them escape. When the army had left, Garnel and I returned to the others to get into the colosseum.

Whatever else may have happened today, my esteem of Maxwell has lifted a bit. Except for his sneering glances at me and Neghri, and the occasional evil thought I could see flitting across his face (because he knows if he says anything out loud he'll not come out too well), he helped a great deal.

Apparently he's been mistaken in the past for some criminal named Cyril something or other, and he volunteered to allow himself to be led in as a prisoner. He even played the part to the hilt, whining just enough (as is his habit) to be convincing.

However, Sanjuro seemed to take more advantage of our situation than was necessary. He enjoyed it when he cut Maxwell to make it seem as though there had been a struggle (though he was already bleeding from removing his medallion). And while we were playing the part ofthe guards, he cuffed Maxwell several times. I admit, it wouldn't be improper to do so, but he could have let someone who would do less damage do it once in a while. And so Sanjuro chatted with the guard aimlessly while poor Maxwell had to keep playing the part, knowing he would get battered every time he did. Finally, exasperated with Sanjuro's taking advantage of the situation, I gave the password.

When we got inside, we were almost immediately blocked by a giant (especially for a windling) troll who seemed to be keeper of the bestiary (we had entered through the back way). I could hear all the animals behind him and almost left to go to them, but didn't. But I will admit that I did encourage that bear to take a swing at the troll.

Sanjuro hissed at me to go do what they had agreed upon. Notice I said, "they". Apparently this happened while Blue, Miranda, and I were out getting the password for everyone and then they neglected to tell me. So Garnel had to fill me in as we left to look for the Throalic ambassador.

We didn't find him, but I heard the battle from the east. When Garnel and I went to check it, we saw that several of the soldiers were retreating back to the colosseum. We made best possible speed to the others to tell them, and for our warning we got, "Where's the ambassador?!" from Sanjuro, the big mighty t'skrang who picks on windlings only when the rest of the group is around so the windlings can't kill him. I then noticed that they had killed the troll and immediately looked for his keys. Sanjuro waved them in front of me, but wouldn't let me have them, saying that we'd get them on the way back.

Apparently t'skrang don't think all that well in high-pressure situations. At least not this one. Obviously if the army retreated to the colosseum there was no way we were going to get back to the bestiary and free them all before we were overrun. Not to mention the fact that in that case we could use some help. So while the others went on ahead, I began to free the animals myself, herding them out of the colosseum and to freedom. All except a single healthy looking lion, who let me ride him and we joined the battle.

I don't know where the other Adepts came from, or why, but our party was locked in combat with them when I came in. Maxwell was nowhere to be seen, but the lion and I just plunged into the fray. No one was killed during the battle, though some of us were pretty badly mangled (the lion was fine, the great beast!), and eventually we drove the other Adepts away. Apparently Maxwell found the ambassador, and we escaped from the colosseum.

Now we're going to see the dwarfs again, but I'd really just rather see Neghri.

50/5

We went South to, naturally, continue the Search for Rokk. Instead of the Ork of Legend, we found a whole buncha orks, from several different tribes including the Broken Fang and Iron Fist. Garnel, Neghri, and I investigated the camp while everyone else stayed at the airship. I had dropped off the lion along the way.

I went and sneaked around some of the tents, leaving Neghri at the edge of the camp. Garnel went in a different direction (we had agreed to meet in a few minutes). When I went into a kind of promising looking tent, I found it was an alchemist's tent. There were huge cauldrons and several orks, all obeying the alchemist's commands, whatever they were (can't speak orkish, don't care to after this experience). They were throwing clumps of hair into the cauldrons. I don't know what kind of hair--dark andwiry, but it didn't seem like an animal's hair. When it had cooked for a while they strained it out and were drying it into a powder.

I don't know what tipped them off that I was there, but they suddenly saw me. I ducked out and called for Neghri, then headed into the woods and lost my pursuit. Eventually I met up with Garnel again and we headed back to the airship. He told me he had overheard the orks talking about a battle tomorrow. I had heard kind of the same thing. Funny thing is, though, I think Garnel looked a little singed.

51/1

We told the others what we had seen. Sanjuro scoffed and we flew onward to a place the others seem to have been before--to a place where they fought a Horror: the Corinthian.

Now there were dwarves living in those caves, said they were sent by the King of Throal. They didn't believe us when we said we came with his good graces, and at first were hostile. But I knew they couldn't be too bad, because their ponies were in good shape.

Anyway, Sanjuro the Long Winded started up again. The dwarves complained about being "bearded" by some orks and complained about some other stuff. Sanjuro got political. Maxwell got bragging. I got bored and decided to sneak out, looking at other caves and stuff, along with Garnel. Miranda came too--she can sneak along well for a human. We didn't find anything, but eventually the others came looking for us.

Apparently, they had met someone when they were here before, Grannie or something like that. She eats bats! How horrible! They kept making suggestions that she eat Neghri, and I finally got up and had to leave with him. Before that, though, she was talking like the Corinthian, her master, was still alive. The Heroes here were supposed to have killed him . . . .

That was when things got messy. The ork battle down south, between the orks and the Therans, was getting messy. The orks were retreating rapidly in this direction. Sanjuro and the others in the group immediately decided we would have to help the orks even though Rokk hadn't been among them and babbled out a plan. It was a pretty good plan, actually, but the dwarves didn't want to help us. It seemed that those were the orks who had been bearding them. Ouch. That was when I realized what the hair had been in the cauldrons. I still get shivers.

Eventually we convinced the dwarfs to help us and the battle went well until another side showed up--Rokk Krinn.

He's started his own Ork Nation now. Busy guy. He probably hasn't had much sleep lately and that was why he was in such a bad mood. He was incredibly rude to me when I met him. Then from the ranks of the orks came some guy on a horse. He challenged Rokk.

We all had to stay out or else it would mean all out war. It certainly wasn't my fault about the guy's horse, though. Even though Sanjuro berated *me* later, what was I to do? The guy's horse was tired! He had ridden it hard! Even the best-trained animals occasionally spook (except Neghri). But because I ride an animal, and am a Beastmaster, naturally everyone thinks that anything that happens with a beast is because of me. And Sanjuro accused me of trying to start a war. Fortunately I've learned to pretty much ignore what he says any more.

But Rokk's dead. He was slain and borne away by his orks. His orks insisted that we leave, and we took care of the dwarfs, made sure they were safe.

I stayed behind in the area, to sneak around in a tent that the orks who had killed Rokk set up. It was a familiar tent--the alchemist's tent. This time, though, no one noticed me. The orks were all arguing because somehow the leader had been proven to not be the true kin of the monarch of Cara Fahd. Stupid Fists of Fahd. I stole a couple of vials and a pair of grimoires and they never even noticed.

When I got back to the airship, I gave the grimoires to Maxwell who looked through them at their spells. Some were for nethermancers, but most were wizards and some other magic users, too. Then Maxwell looked at my vials. One of them was full of the powder made of the dwarf beards, and it's used to weaken the enemy, if you sprinkle it on them. The other vial itself was magic. It helps you heal.

What the orks do is now none of our business in their Cara Fahd, I guess. It just seems like kind of a bummer that Garnel and the others did all that hunting just to watch him die.

51/5

We had dinner with the king, and I made sure Neghri was invited. The king looked awful. All sick and weak. I think someone should've given him a puppy to play with--it'd make him feel better, I know. I don't think that Sanjuro's poetry and Maxwell's babbling made it any easier for him, and would have liked to kick Maxwell (I couldn't because my legs aren't long enough and the table was pure crystal and could be seen through--not to mention the fact that it wouldn't be polite!). I would really have liked to melt the foul-smelling wax on Sanjuro's scales so he dripped all over the floor and made even more a mess than usual and was never invited to eat in Throal again, but I couldn't reach. Miranda was in the way. I think she was just as irritated as I was.

I don't know, though. The prince was really grateful for the stuff we did, and the king seemed to be, too, but the doctor looked nosy. Awfully nosy. I didn't realize it until Blue mentioned it afterwards, though, else I would've said something.

57/3

I haven't written in this journal lately, I guess because I haven't had much exciting to write about, at least nothing that would entertain anyone who snooped into this journal. I've found another windling Beastmaster, Celano, who's taught me different abilities. I like talking to her, a lot.

I've also acquired another "beastie", as Sanjuro would say. Her name's Ryala, and she's a mountain lion. She has the softest fur, and a deep throaty purr that I just love to curl up next to when she's sleeping. I think Neghri's getting a little jealous, but he knows he's got a special place in my heart. I made her a collar, so people know that she's not wild. I hope she won't frighten people too much. She's very sensitive.

Gee, has it been a month since I'd last seen the rest of the group? I met with them today, from whatever they'd been doing after the past month, and both Briana and Blue had tasks for us to do, while Maxwell kept yapping about Naming the group.

We eventually decided to take on Briana's task (to find an elvish tea set) instead of Blue's (taking a message to a dragon) and ignored Maxwell's altogether.

Briana said she's been researching the set for much of her life. It seems awfully important to her, like finding Rokk was to Garnel and Sanjuro (I hope that when we find the set, someone doesn't come forth to challenge it and smite it just when it's within our grasp), so I feel good that we've chosen to take this task on for now.

58/1

We've been travelling for days, but we finally found the Kaer--it felt evil there. It was a Horror's place. The town that had long ago been burned down seemed to have met a very bad fate. I felt bad for the people who lived there.

But it is now dark, and no one wants to go into the cave behind the waterfall at night.

58/2

Last night I woke up to find something attacking Miranda and Garnel. We managed to kill them--if you can kill a living corpse, I guess. Neghri did finely in the battle; I'm so proud of him. I know he hates things like that that reek of evil magic and undeath, but he fought bravely and helped save Miranda and Garnel. Ryala was off hunting, and I think it was best that way. She hasn't been with us long enough to be comfortable with the supernatural like that, so she should probably just get used to regular battles first. I checked to see if she was okay, and found her peacefully hunting.

I don't know if I'll be able to sleep the rest of the night. There's only a few more hours until dawn, and I should be refreshed for when we enter the Kaer, but I doubt I can manage it.
***
I guess I did doze a little.

Suddenly the sun was high in the sky and the group was armoring up. Ryala was there, and not relishing being close to the cave. I let her stay outside the cave, as a watch. Neghri was a little nervous going into the cave, but he was good about it.

When we went inside, we followed a tunnel, Maxwell and us windlings looking to see what we could see in the dark. We came upon a cultivated garden area with a fountain. Looking around, I decided that the garden was being cared for by more of the things that we had seen last night. Neghri got nervous when I figured that out, but I calmed him down. Behind me, I heard a splash. Maxwell was trying to use his Cloak of Greed (he's been working very hard on that lately) to get money out of the fountain. Or actually, he was scanning it awfully hard, enough that it looked like it hurt him, to see if it was a trap.

No, it was just Garnel throwing money in to trick him. I laughed really hard, and even Neghri smiled. He felt much better about being in the Kaer when he knew things could be relaxed amongst us - Sanjuro's uptightedness makes him irritated and jumpy.

Eventually, I decided that we had been there long enough and that we should keep going. I followed the one that had the most footprints and everyone else eventually followed.

I wish I hadn't chosen that tunnel, though. There were more corpses like the ones from the night there--cadavermen. They hurt Neghri! No one's allowed to hurt Neghri! And I let them know that in no uncertain terms! If they weren't dead before they're completely gone now. Poor Neghri. If he had gotten hurt too much more, he would've shied and fled the Kaer. I couldn't blame him if he did, but I know him. He would've felt guilty.

They were kind of frightening, though, in their mindless wanderings. Like they were going on about the same business they'd been going about for hundreds of years, but there was nothing more to do. The books in the drawers were disintegrated, the cadavermen were disintegrating. They were probably the people who used tolive in the town outside the Kaer.

After that, we found our ways into a small office. Some guy met us there and started talking. I don't know what his name was. I know it's not that good to completely pay no attention to what people are saying, but he started talking about backgrounds and pasts, and there was neat stuff on his desk to look at instead!

No one noticed me sneak over to the guy's desk. I looked through the desk drawers, then everything but the guy's drawers. He didn't have anything really interesting, just pretty. And he just kept talking about tea and seeing the master. So I left.

I left Neghri with the others, so they wouldn't realize I'd left, and I found a place with lots of silver, and what looked like old elvish tomes which I'm sure Briana would be interested in, at least for their historical value. There was no magic in them. I also found another room, that used to be a library, but all the books were gone.

Then I felt Neghri's fear and knew I had to get back to him. Ryala was fine - there was nothing outside, though I think she was a little nervous when she felt me get afraid for Neghri. But Neghri and the others had moved to another tunnel. Following them, I noticed cadavermen coming out of the two unexplored tunnels, looking ready to fight. I flew to the group and told them, but they were too busy with the Horror.

Yes, it was a Horror. No wonder Neghri was afraid. I sprinkled some of the dust that I stole from the orks on the cadavermen before the decision was made to attack the Horror. Neghri bravely joined me.

I don't know what happened, but I guess I just went berserk! I was slashing at its face, and Sanjuro attacked, and suddenly I guess I sank my claw shape into its brain or something, because it fell dead in only a few seconds. With it, the cadavermen I had sprinkled the dust on fell too. The other cadavermen, those who had apparently been in the cavern before our little band had entered it, still stood, but they seemed to be under the control of the guy from behind the desk, who had only wanted to kill the Horror. They didn't attack.

We found the tea set, buried in the garden under a topiary dolphin. Unfortunately,I made a mistake, and in my excitement to help Briana find what she had been looking for for so long, forgot about my scars. When she started to dig up the dirt with her buckler, I decided to do the same and took off the armor on my arm and dig, too. I might've gotten away without my scars being seen, but Miranda noticed it.

I don't think she realized what she was doing when she mentioned them. It's not her fault, really. It just would've been a lot easier if she hadn't brought them up. I didn't want to talk about R'kohkim to them yet, especially not to Maxwell and Sanjuro. I might've brought it up to Miranda or Garnel. Maybe, in time, Briana. I could've confessed it to Akasha, probably. I doubt she would've realized it.

But they wouldn't leave it alone. And they kept sending me away and bringing me back and sending me away again while they tried to decide what to do with me. I almost wish they'd sent me away and told me not to come back. It would've just been easier than the resolution they came to, which I am in no position to argue with right now.

I'm not allowed to wander off, because they don't trust me. I must continue the search for the Horror (which I've been doing anyway). I'm not allowed to be a part of the Group Pattern once they form one. Of course, that seems to me to be a while off, but they've never listened to me anyway.
