Miranda
Human Archer and Mercenary
From the notes of Caarad Surestrider, submitted to Borrum Binbalik for his work "On the Bearers of Akasha".
Miranda was a mercenary who first joined the Bearers of Akasha when Throal hired her to help rescue Prince Neden in Kratas. From a quiet background, Miranda was somewhat overwhelmed by the events of the next few months. Faced with moral dilemmas such as the exile of Mal and epic events such as the Battle of Prajjor's Field, she nonetheless acquitted herself honorably and bravely. Garnel, in comments made much later than the date of this interview, said that had she been there when the Bearers Named themselves, Miranda would have joined the pattern. She left on 1 Doddul 1508 to rescue her younger brother.
My interview with Miranda was conducted on 30 Borrum 1508, three days after her return from the River Pearl incident. With the group seemingly shattered beyond hope of repair, the normally garrulous archer was loathe to grant me an interview. After some pressure, she relented and met me at The King of Throal, a well-kept inn near the main gates of the city.
"You know, I'm really not in the mood for this but if it will get you to stop bothering me...My name is Miranda, and I am from the village of Dravil. I have two brothers, a younger one Named Justin and an older one Named Richard. My mother's Name is Chrystal. My father, Alpern, is dead, killed by Theran slavers."
"Having two brothers, I was taught how to take care of myself but being small in size made melee disadvantageous, so I took up missile weapons. I worked hard at it and my father, who was the best weaponsmith in the region, made a special crossbow for me Named Twicebolt. A few months ago, my mother was called away on business and travelled to Throal. During her absence, I went on an extended hunting trip with my brother Richard. While we were away, the Therans attacked our village. We returned to smoke and cinders. Our house was burned down, and our father's smithy destroyed. Worst of all, our father was dead and Justin, our younger brother, was nowhere to be found."
"At first, I didn't know whether he had escaped or been taken by the Therans. But since he has not shown up in these past months, I can only assume the worst. Richard decided to join with the other surviving men in an attempt to go after the invading force and any other slaving groups that might have been operating in the area. I haven't spoken to him since he left. I was left with the burden of travelling to Throal, and telling mother what had happened. It was then that she revealed to me that she was in the employ of the Eye of Throal. With nothing left for us in Dravil, we decided to stay in Throal. Mother dedicated herself to finding Justin. Not content to just sit around, I got a job with the Throalic Guard. One of my first assignments was as a caravan guard protecting some dignitaries going to Kratas. It was there that I met the Bearers..."
At this point, a dwarf in nondescript clothing approached our table.
He presented Miranda with a badge naming him an agent of the Eye of Throal!
Although they spoke quietly, my obsidiman hearing came through for me yet
again. It seems that Chrystal, Miranda's mother, had somehow found
the location of Miranda's younger brother. Without a word of farewell,
Miranda shot up from the table and strode quickly out of the inn. Sighing
to myself, I took out my purse and picked up the tab for the meals.
