The name Rand Al'Thor was taken from Robert Jordan's legendary Wheel of Time series. Heard they're the best fantasy books around, check em out!
The Story of Rand: He's now 22 years of age, wielding a Rune staff as his weapon of choice, and fights for the Church of Light, but he had a much humbler youth:
From the beginning, Rand knew he was different from the others in his village. He saw things that others could not see, felt things others could not feel. And for this he was made fun of. His parents lived the life of a vagabond. Just trying to get by. Everyday, Rand and his father would go down to the blacksmith for another day of work. His father was a blacksmith's assistant. Rand helped out his father every chance he had. He looked up to his dad. His father was a strong man. Courageous, in the eyes of Rand. At the age of 12, Rand witnessed something very tragic. His village was raided by a large group of changelings. They killed many people in their savage attack. Leaving Rand one parent short. His mother was killed by one of the changelings. Rand tried to defend her, but he was too weak at the time. This made him hate changelings for the rest of his life.
After the raid, the town was getting itself back together. Rand noticed a stranger in town, though. This man was an odd fellow, indeed. Rand was frightened of him as soon as he saw him. One day the stranger came into the blacksmith's. "What can I do for you," his father said. And in a low, calm voice the stranger said, "I am looking for someone. Someone very important." Curious, Rand came out from the back of the shop, to see what was going on. "He is the one," the stranger remarked as Rand appeared. This is when the stranger said he needed to have a talk with Rand and his father. It turned out that this man was really a student of the great mind mage, Torence. He told Rand that he had special powers higher than any normal human.
After a few days of talks, Rand left his father to be a student of Torence. For nine years, Rand went through harsh training. His mind developed faster than anyone could have predicted. His intelligence skyrocketed from a little above average to somewhere around the 260 mark. He soon learned how to use a sword and shield. And how to attack and defend with only his mind. He was taught that he was better than everyone else, thus explaining his arrogant disposition. Then, at the age of 21, Rand left his mentor for the adventure of his lifetime. He met up with a group of travelers and decided to seek out fame and glory. And this is what he found. He helped save many people from many dangerous things. Amongst his favorite accomplishments was defeating a full grown Hydra with his companions. And his adventures are still going.

Levels 5 & 6: Well, It's been awhile since anybody has said much about Rand, but what's there to say... He's still alive and doing fine. He has way to many Psionics :), which I might add he finds some pretty interesting uses for. He now has a spiffed rune staff at his command, and he's as strong as ever now. He's survived the insanity prone adventure that we did, insanity free. (Wish I could say the same for the rest of us), I guess it's just a sign of a Mind mages strong will power, and his ability to deal with things -Rehlman
(12/21/97) A sad day is upon us, *Rand has died*. Today we say our last good-byes, and shed our tears in memory of a great guy. He died a most honorable death, as would be expected by a man who been has been a living weapon of justice, a visionary, and has given new faith to the dyeing words of truth and honor. He died in the groups attempt to save all of Palladium from realm of the dead, and died not only for defending our cause, but also to save a companions life. That is the true mark of a hero, and a hero Rand was. The gods will surely reward Rand for his actions. He may be dead, but the spirit of Rand shall live on in all of us. -Rehlman
