Dear Scholars in Afroasiatic Languages,
Plans for the 28th annual North American Conference of Afroasiatic
Linguistics in Portland Oregon, right before the American Oriental Society
Annual Meeting, are now underway. We have dates and venue, and now seek
papers from scholars working on Afroasiatic languages.
Proposals for 20-minute papers are requested on any area of the phonology,
grammar, syntax, synchrony, diachrony, sociolinguistics, or epigraphy of
languages belonging to the Berber, Chadic, Cushtic, Egyptian, Omotic, or
Semitic branches of Afroasiatic.
The absolute deadline to submit proposals for consideration is January
20th, 2000. Please send in the attached form and an abstract for your
proposed paper to the address at the bottom of this e-mail. The committee
will notify you if you are put onto the schedule.
Working Panel Areas:
(Panel Composition will ultimately depend on the submitted papers.)
- Afroasiatic Comparative Linguistics (The Diakonoff Memorial Panel)
- Afroasiatic Epigraphy
- Central African: Chadic
- East African: Cushitic and Omotic
- East Semitic: Akkadian
- Ethiosemitic
- Neo-Aramaic
- North African: Berber and Egyptian
- Northwest Semitic: Hebrew, Aramaic, and the Levant
- South Semitic: Arabic and South Arabic
Those who are also attending the American Oriental Society Conference can
request to be scheduled in the joint session between NACAL and AOS, but
must register for both conferences separately and realize that such slots
will be limited in number due to time constraints.
Contributors are sought for a volume of comparative or diachronic papers
in the field of Afroasiatic Linguistics in memory of I.M. Diakonoff.
Contributions may be in any reasonable font or style, but only
camera-ready laser-print copy will be accepted. The book will very likely
be published by Benjamins. The editor is M. Lionel Bender and sub-editors
are David Appleyard (SOAS), Marcello Lamberti (Trieste), and Gabor Takacs
(currently in Frankfurt). These editors will make final decisions about
corrections (obligatory) and suggested improvements (optional).
