Thank god there's a good alternative to US Chess Live 1.0 interface!! Anyhow, I haven't been using CClient for too long but it seems fairly solid. It would be nice to be able to customize individual channel fonts to distinguish them better. Also, havin
a kibitz/whisper window directly under the board in the board tab would be nice for observing games. But all in all, more than functional for free!

i have at the moment only one suggestion, it would be very nice to see the opponent rating beside his name.
That is very important because if u meet a high ranked opponent u r more willing to accept a draw when playing a rated game....
otherwise im very impressed by your work ...
if u still are developing the software im planning to make some piece sets of my own design

Chess Client is terrific.
One strange thing in v1.41
zeros (0) not always interpreted as 0 when typed
in terminal mode. Specific example:
alias o0 set open 0
o0
You are not playing or examining a game.
This is as though I had typed 'oo' instead of o0
In other cases, 0 is zero, as when typing
set open 0
this is why it's so strange.
could be that when 0 is connected to letters in
a string, it's interpreted at o, but this is
really weird.

Hello Plotinus
In seek graph add new symbols for new variants
ie crazyhouse wild etc
Install a filter so that unregistered players do not see ads to which they are not entitled to respond eg ie ones which set a rating range
It would be nice if like for example Chessmaster any internet chess interface had a touch move provision ie click on a piece or pawn and the opponent is alerted by highlight that a piece has been touched and the program compels the player to move it ... b
t that might catch a few to many people out ! [I understand that part of this may well be the province of server code and not CClient]
If one chooses to have the board in a separate window you lose all the controls under the board
Thanks

It would be very helpful if the last move (opponent's move) was highlighted. This would make it clear what your opponent played. I would suggest highlighted squares, or an arrow such as used with chessnet for windows.
Also, it would be quite appropriate to have the ratings of both players displayed.

perhaps the "sought" graph could show the region excluded or included by the user's formula. Then you could also show sought games which are excluded, and it would also protect users against faulty formulas.

I think it would be useful:
In the board window
a) To have at the top of the score sheet the time control you are playing with . You play so many different time controls that sometimes you do not realize which one you are playing.
b) To have at the bottom, not all the pieces that have been taken for both sides, but only the differences in these pieces. You cancel all equal pieces. This way at a glance you can see the ballance material without the need to count all the pices taken.<

CClient seems to have problems with chess.net.
* - Illegal moves there are sent as "Move Failed: Illegal Move" so cclient doesn't reset the board!
* - When you unobserve it doesn't work (probably due to similar string issues)
On All servers, there's no apparent way to change the login script that it sends. Each time I log in, it sets shout 1 even if I have it at 0 before.
On All servers, there's no way to turn off auto-observe of partners' games.
On All servers, there's no way to make the left mouse button just be "highlight text" (that I can see).
Also, and this is just a cool feature that would be nice, customizeable toolbar buttons would be cool.
Thanks, and keep up the great work!

Hi,
Do you think it is possible to use this interface to connect to Chess.net since if there is provision for ICC which is actually commercialize. Chess.net is also free, like FICS.

You need a cclient FAQ. :) I am going through
a lot of the old comments, and I can see that
quite a number of people are complaining about
things which you can set just by editing the
options, or things. For example, someone said
the pieces should move instantaneously - that
can be done, unless I am mistaken. Also, CClient
ALREADY auto-follows your partner. Many players
are used to having to follow their partners with
other interfaces, so when they do so, the server
follows them and then gets the observe command
from CClient, so it unobserves. DO NOT FOLLOW
YOUR PARTNER WHEN USING CCLIENT. That should
be in the FAQ. ;-)
Also, good option would be smart moves, and grab
a piece will show you squares it can move to.
Note those are both optional. Thanks ;-)

Some ideas:
1) When I observe a game, I don't get all the moves played from the very beginning but only from the point I started to observe. Why?
2) You don't have cut & paste in your terminal window though it's very comfortable to do this without even moving the mouse after you marked a text like you have it in BlitzIn.
3) When you play/observe a game you only see the time on the clock but not if you play eg 3 4 or 5 2

I would like to see the option to open more than one "say/tell/kibitz" window at a time, with different settings. For instance, one window for kibitzes on a game, another for shouts, another for tells to users.
Another feature, perhaps in addition: to be able to see different channels in different colours. For instance, I am always in ch 1 on FICS, but don't consider tells to that channel to be as important as a debate in other channels.
CClient is an excellent peice of work, very comprehensive and usable. Thankyou.

I think I've found a couple of bugs in the games saved in PGN format. The location field in the header seems to say ISC when connected to either FISC or ICC. The second bug is the last move of the game is not saved in the file.
Can the ratings of the opponents and the results of the game be included in the PGN header?

Chess Client v1.4 is really good. Previously, I used Chessbd, which is a pretty good interface. But Chess Client is even better than Chessbd. The only thing that Chessbd has which is better is the black border around the white pcs. and the way Chessbd
hows all legal moves for any pcs. when you hold the mouse down on that piece. Chessbd has some better piece styles to choose from, too. But I managed to make the board pieces look good together by playing around with the colors. It took me several hour
to get something good. But now I am satified. Other than board-and-pieces-graphics, Chess Client is better than Chessbd in every other catagory (at least the ones which I use). Chess Client is MUCH easier to use. Chessbd has a pre-Windows95 look, whe
eas Chess Client has a smooth Windows95 look and feel. I really don't have to type much of anything in Chess Client. It is all left-clicks and right-clicks. Chess Client is free. And CClient bug reports are promptly responded to. The author Chess Clie
t (and the author or Chessbd, too) deserves praise for doing this work. They certainly aren't doing it for the money. They must love to help us play chess. Thank you Plotinus!

The coordinates on my Chess Client board are reversed. I noticed it when the move list showed a move as Qb4 but according to the board coordinates it was Qg5. I think that it is probably a bug. I am using version 1.4. The correct notation was Qb4. So
the move list is correct and the board's coordinates are labelled wrong.

Quite an interface! I, as a newbie to win95 GUI's find it very user friendly. If I may, I got a few questions:
1.The main page I see is not similar to the one showing on the webpage (on the webpage I see many morefeatures on the toolbar? am I missing something or doing something wrong?
2.Is it possible to add more sets to the new version? can I export from another interface maybe?
3.when chatting, must I see/use the chat box/screen in addition to the main page? Seems like an unneccessity if I am in terminal mode?
Thanks in advance for any help, and again congrats for a cool GUI I will surely use instead of slics or ziics

I've only been using Cclient for a little over a week now, but it's looking like the FICS client for me. Thanks for writing it! A couple of things though: I'm losing the first (leftmost) two characters in the cclient.log file. Anything I can do about t
at? Also, how can I resize the board in a separate window? And, finally, the pawns have a little extra, well, pawn, on the top left side. It just needs a tiny pruning of some pixels is all. This on the second 2D set.
But, all in all, this is a great program!
To change the size of the boards with the Boards in Seperate Windows option selected, simply click and drag on the edges of the window, like you would with any sizeable window. Note CClient, unlike other interfaces, will scale to any size you set this wa
, not just one of several preset sizes.

Problem 1: I had a problem with NS 4.x and CClient's feature to automatically open a link. Soln: The problem was that I had set NS to prompt me for online/offline mode. If you set default to online, this problem goes away. Problem 2: CClient opening
p a mail prog that you don't use any more when clicking on a person's e-mail address. Soln: The problem is that your URL:Mailto Protocol is pointing to the wrong prog. In any folder, go to file->options->file types. Then, find your URL:Mailto Protocol
ntry. Simply look at what was in your URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol entry, and copy it into the URL:Mailto Protocol entry. Be aware that you may have to add some " marks around the executable filename to get windows to quit bitching at you! :) CClien
should now open your NS mail prog. to send the mail.

First of all - I want to say you're doing an excellent job. Thanks.
I've made a list of what I see as pros and cons for Cclient. I've compared Cclient with Slics (frequently used until now) and Winboard (have tested it, but I don't like it) on my own PC, but I also knew some mac-interface (don't remember the name - there
s at least two). At the moment Cclient is the best interface when you're not playing. During a match (I like fast games) I still prefer Slics (see my - - - comments).
I'm not certain that what follows under is correct - please tell me if I have missed something.
+++ ability to customize colour/font and sound for says and tells
+++ possible to choose automatic update on commands as who a
+++ it's free
+++ full bughouse and suicide support (ie. slics dont allow you to move the king for capture in suicide, but you can type the move)
- - - missing moveblinks (slics-feature) I like moveblinks better than animation
- - - missing customizing/different sounds for capture and castling
- - - slics shows legal moves when clicking on a piece
Some minor comments:
- - board/pieces ... i'm not able to tell exactly, but I like slics, for instance the white pieces have a black border, which makes it possible to have a black and white board
+ the toolbar makes it fast and easy to use the frequently used commands
+ two custom command buttons
+ easy to learn and use due to buttons with good icons
- save layout (maybe possible in some INI-file?)
- missing customizing/different sounds for observed games
- i like the buttons for finger aso. in version 1.3
My best regards

Hey! Really you are doing a great job. Each new version is better than the last one, and the interface is very costumizable.
I just would like to send you the following suggestions to make ChessClient the best chess client ever!:
- Settings|General|Font: possibility to costumize up to 8 channels with different colors, to be able to distinguise the coolest channels!
- auto-detection of wrong moves, like trying to move the K as a B. At the moment the interface wait untill the server returns the error code, so, if you are lagging has lost some tenths of seconds (I love 1 0!!)
- Graphical window representing the seeks (as in blitzin)
Thanks to improve the Cut&Paste and wrap long lines on the terminal window :) Not so sure about to eliminate the buttoms for finger/say/tell/asses/... but it is a minor question, and always opinable. (I prefer old way that right-click, but perhaps it is j
st to use it!)
All people who visit this site: download RIGHT NOW the new 1.4 version!!

By far, the best interface. Here are some
things you might want to add to new versions,
if they arent already in the works:
1- Seek map, as in BlitzIn. 2- Default color settings for different piece sets. Should be possible to simply push a button and revert to
defaults. 3- X mouse action: button that turns off mouse action so you can copy/paste and click on things without performing mouse action.
Keep up the excellent work!

Windows 98 has not been released publicly yet, and is still in, basically, beta-testing. I cannot commit to supporting Windows 98 until its public release.
