Charlottesville's First OverPower Tournament, May 31, 1997

Brendon Marotta Wins Charlottesville's First OverPower Tournament

Brendon Marotta triumphed undefeated in a pack of 14 players to win The Charlottesville OverPower Club's first tournament held on May 31st, 1997. The tournament was limited to decks built from two of the original Marvel starter decks: Mutants Unite and Sworn to protect. Since the card list was very limited it was a contest of pure skill. With a level playing field for cards, contestants were limited to small choices of deck building and large choices of playing strategy. Brendon Marotta's previous tournament experiences served him well and his victory was well earned.

Ten of the players were from Charlottesville and four of the players drove up from Blackburg. Bill Friedl, Shawn Stanford, and Ian Hambrick, all from Blacksburg, Virginia took second, third and fourth respectively. This was the first tournament for all of the participants except Brendon. This was his fifth tournament, and his first tournament win. Brendon has finished second, third, and fifth in previous tournaments.

After the first four games Brendon Marotta was seated first with a record of 4-0, Shawn Stanford was seated second having lost only to Brendon Marotta, Bill Friedl was seated third, and Ian Hambrick was seated fourth. Bredon Marotta defeated Ian Hambrick, and Shawn Stanford and Bill Friedl fought back and forth for many battles in a long and contentious endgame. Shawn, with two characters left, made an error and let Jean Grey go down leaving him with Rogue, but still fought on for several more battles before finally losing.

Brendon defeated Bill to win first, finishing with a 6-0 record having played and defeated each of the other top four players. Brendon won a set of three metal prints, a holoflash Batman Avenger hero, a set of Adam Warlock cards, and a set of 4 DC Any Character cards. Bill Friedl came in second with a 4-2 record and won a holoflash Batman Detective hero, a set of Adam Warlock cards, and a set of 4 DC Any Character cards.

Shawn recovered from his loss in the semi-finals to defeat Ian Hambrick and finish third with a 4-2 record to win a set of Adam Warlock cards, and a set of 4 DC Any Character cards. Ian Hambrick finished fourth with a 3-3 record and won a set of 4 DC Any Character cards.

Everyone who participated received a Justice League Any Character promotion card, and I personally gave away common JLA characters and their specials to all participants.

Special congradulations to those newcomers to the game of OverPower who tied for fifth with a 2-2 record: Megan Marotta, lost only to Brendon Marotta who came in first and Bill Friedl who came in second. At just turned 6, Megan is the youngest OverPower tournament player I know of. Megan was very brave in Battle and very gracious in defeat, thanking each of her opponents for playing with her.

Jim Huneycutt and Craig Maher lost only to second and third place. Mark Owen showed a remarkable grasp of the game and lost only to first and another fifth place. Danny O Cline lost only to fourth and another fifth, and Kristin Maher had a great showing losing only to two other fifth place players.

Many players were still working on the mechanics of the game (trying to remember that you can attack with training cards) and trying to figure out how many to venture and when to conceed. Rules questions kept me busy for the first two games, but by the third game players were feeling more comfortable with the rules and order of play.

Another special congradulations to Brad Lowe who was the only player outside the top four to defeat Bill Friedl.
