December 12, 1999. I arrived in Boston early in the morning and
my good fried Mo picked me up at the airport. Mo had to work all day so
I spent the day making deliveries with him and meeting some interesting
people. That night, Mo and I talked and laughed but only played a couple
games of OP before we started building him a new deck. He wanted to use
Beyonder, Xaos, Scarlet Witch and the old Magneto. It's a very interesting
deck concept. It was late before he finally decided what cards he would
put in the deck and we were both tired so we didn't play test it. He got
a phone call about 1:00 AM and I fell asleep before he got off the phone
December 13. Morning came way too soon. We arrived early for
the tournament (a first for Mo) but there were plenty of guys there waiting
for us. The Bertrands must have been the first ones there as the drive
was better than before and they arrived around 10:30. The tournament started
at 1:00 and it got off to a good start for me. My Beyonder, White Queen,
X-Babies and old Magneto (in reserve) was ready to go. First up was Justin
(League of America). It was a close game for about four hands but discards
caught up with him. I was 1-0 and ready to play my next game.
Round two was against Ty Bertrand. It was a close game for a while
but when my KO event came up, he KO'd Spawn and that proved to be his downfall.
His discards started coming and I quickly took advantage of them, winning
a pretty easy game. 2-0 and on a roll.
Next up was Howard Bertrand and all I could think about was the last
game I had played against Howard. He should have won but he made a big
mistake and I was able to take advantage of it and win.
The very first hand, I had about as perfect hand as I could have. The
KO event came up and he KO'd his Scarlet Witch to get the +5 to venture
total. This caused him to discard a SW negate. I placed my Magneto 11 Any
Power and a couple other cards and he placed a couple. I didn't want him
to concede so I only ventured 2 and he ventured 1 and stayed in. I got
to go first and I played a Morph activator for my Power Mimic, which I
played on his Spawn. I don't usually like to play it in the first hand
but Howard was playing Any Character's and I didn't think he could defend
it. He couldn't and he quickly conceded. I then beat him in 4 or 5 hands.
3-0 and ready to play the last of the Bertrands, Derek.
Derek was playing 4FP and after the tournament, I asked him why he
switched to it. He said he was so he could beat me. It worked as he ventured
6 for the game when he got his event "No cards with an Energy icon may
be used to attack this battle". Derek went to 4-0 and I was 3-1.
The top eight players went on to play a double elimination bracket.
My first game was against Ty and although it was close, I pulled off another
win. Beating him twice in one tournament was very good for me and I was
hoping someone would knock him out for me so that I didn't have to play
him again. Three wins against him in one tournament might be asking too
much.
Next was Lord Tim O'Leary. His deck was a Strength deck and he really
was never in the game. It went 5 or 6 hands but I had control the whole
time. He was playing Any Characters and I never lose to Any Characters
in a tournament.
I played Mike Dow next and he was playing Any Characters, also. While
I was beating Mike, Ty was putting Derek out of the tournament. The finale
four players was myself, Ty, Mike Dow and Lord Tim. I had beat all of them
in the double elimination bracket and the draw came down to me and Mike
again. After I beat him in the first game, Mike said he'd do better the
next time against me because he would know my deck better. He was wrong.
I beat him in two hands. I still haven't lost to Any Characters in a tournament.
Ty beat Lord Tim and now he would have to beat me two straight games
as I was undefeated.
Ty beat me in two straight games. I was very disappointed and I could
hardly believe it happened. Later, Mo told me that I didn't play near as
aggressive in the two games as I usually play and that really made the
difference. Looking back at it, I think he was right.
Ty's only two loses for the day came from me and my only loses came
from Derek (one) and Ty (two). It was a great tournament with some great
players and people.
Thanks, Mo for all you did for me.
Now all I can say is, OP CUP 3 will be for me!
