THE OP CUP 2 RESULTS
As much fun as this weekend was, it took alot out of me. Up all night
and playing cards all day. It was great to see everyone who showed up.
There was some great competition returning for the event. Four of our final
seven players also made the top seven at the first CUP. There were 22 players
today at THE CUP. The top seven who will return for Sunday are: Derek Bertrand
4-0, Doug Simms, Darin Simms, Myles Head, Brian Hildreth, Matt Fell and
Matthew Puckett all finished at 3-1.
My first game was against a new player, Mike Gleckner. He was playing
Onslaught, Babies, Invisible Woman and The Ray in reserve. He was venturing
very aggressively the first two hands but his inexperience started to show
after that. I beat him even though he knocked out Beyonder. (I was playing
Beyonder, White Queen, Babies and old Mags in reserve. Who didn't know
that?) I'm going to regret writing this, but I cannot remember who I played
in the second game. I did win and at 2-0 I had to play my brother, Darin,
in round three. He had H4H, Beast:The Brute, Reavers and Thing in reserve.
One big mistake by me and he pulled out the win. Round four paired me up
against my cousin, Phil Miller. I guess it was my family day. It a really
good game, I finally pulled out a win. Phil was playing the same deck as
I was. I was ready to play for the money right then. My deck was playing
great and I didn't want to stop. If only my Blue Area Of The Moon deck
and my DC deck (Wonder Woman, Catwoman:Whiplash, Robin and Batman in reseerve)
would play so good. They didn't and I went out in the first round of the
DC tournament and I didn't make single elim in the Homebase.
I played Myles in the first game on Sunday and it was one of the best
games I've ever played in. He pulled off two really big ventures to beat
me. I then played Derek and I pulled off one of my chain attacks
in the first hand. I played Morph's Amazing X-Man (Level 2 Fighting
attack. May make two additional attacks.) from the battlesite through Beyonder.
He defended his Spawn with a level 7 fighting power card. I then knew he
didn't have a negate and I threw all I had at him. My first follow-up attack
was White Queen's 6 Intellect special. He defended and my next attack was
W.Q.'s level 4 energy attack special, followed by Magneto's 4 multi attack
and then a level 5 multi-power power card. He ran out of defense and I
knocked out his Spawn. In hand three, a well timed JW knocked out
his Scarlet Witch and he conceded the game. My next game was against Matt
Fell (Thanks for coming Matt! It was a real pleasure meeting you.) He beat
me in two hands. That "No Specials" event can just wipe out a Beyonder
deck. I then lost to Brian in a not-very-close game. My last game was against
Matthew, who had already clinched the number one spot, going 4-0 and being
the only undefeated after 4 rounds. I throughly spanked him, even embarrassed
him, as I showed him how to really play. I thought he would start crying
any minute as my beating was very impressive. Of course, I'm just kidding.
I did win to give Matthew his only defeat of the day but it was a game
of dupes on both sides and not a very good example of what either of our
decks could be. Congrats, Matthew. You deserve to be THE OP CUP 2 CHAMP.
You had a great tournament. See you at the next one!
In the Homebase tournament, Phil Keffer won with LL&L. Big surprise
to see that deck win, eh? The DC tournament was won by Derek Bertrand with
Brainiac, The Ray, Green Lantern and Flash in reserve.
On Sunday, Darin dropped out of THE CUP because of work obligations.
Matthew Puckett then went on to a 4-1 record, just missing going undefeated
when he lost his last game. Myles and Derek each went 3-2 while Brian and
I went 2-3. Matt Fell went 1-4.
