Jon Land, Phil Miller, AJ Kitsmiller, Myles Head and myself made
the siw hour drive to Chicago for the Regional there. This was one of the
most fun tournaments that I have attended. After saying hi to some guys
I hadn't seen since last year's trip to Chicago, Jeff Clear and Mark Couture
amoung others, guys I hadn't seen in awhile and meeting many guys, things
got started. There was 23 players getting ready for the Big Event. I was
playing my Beyonder, White Queen, X-Babies and old Magneto in reserve deck.
My first game was agianst Richie's defensive team of Reavers, Captain America,
Starjammers and old Spider-Woman in reserve. In hand three I drew my KO
event and it was alot of discards for Richie after that. It was a good
game but short. Next up was Phil Miller, who was playing the same deck
as I was. I played stupid and Phil beat me easily. I don't remember the
name of my next opponent, (sorry) but he had a deck with Sabertooth, old
Hawkeye, Cyclops and old Punisher in reserve. It was a short game.
I was now 2-1 and with 16 players going to single elimination, I was almost
sure to get in but I wanted a third win just to be sure. My next opponent
was Mark Jedlicka, who had just given Myles a really tough game. Mark was
about one card away from winning that game. I knew I'd have to play well
in this game. His team was Starjammers, H4H, Hulk and Thing in reserve.
Mark ventured very aggressively and that's usally a good thing to do. It
kept him in the game and he had his missions within winning distance most
of the game. I feel he made two mistakes. I ventured one for the win and
he ventured three. I may have conceded if he hadn't given me that extra
card. At the end of the had, I was out of cards but he had one left. I
had venture and was sure I had the game but his one card was a Starjammers
draw three! All three were keepers so I conceded. Two hands later, I ventured
for the game again. Mark had drawn the Best Laid Plans event and we were
both going into our power packs. I choose four power cards that I didn't
have in my hand and placed one of the three power cards in my hand. He
then surprised me by betting three! I knew my draw would be a keeper and
he played the hand very well but in the end I won the hand and the game.
Single elim was next and in round one I played Jeff Clear. This game lasted
only three hands because he discarded tow dupes each of the first two hands
and in hand three, I drew my event No Cards With The Word Teammate May
Be Played. This cost him three cards. Jeff used Spawn, Xaos, Cable and
old Spideer-Woman in reserve. My next opponent played Beyonder, Shadow
King, Scarlet Witch and old Magneto. I couldn't believe it when he played
Shadow Kings level 0 attack that can only be defended with a level five
or higher power card! It knocked out my Magneto and ended up costing me
the game! I had four activators in my hand to defend Mags with but not
a one of them could defend that attack! The only power card I had was a
level two. So I finished 4-2 and had a great time talking with everyone
while the final four played it out. Myles was also knocked out that round
and the final four was AJ Kitsmiller, Phil Miller, John (who I don't remember
his last name) and Paul Wildhaber, SR. AJ and John won their games and
then AJ beat John to win it all at 8-0 with a 4FP deck. Phil got third
and Paul fourth. The prizes were great, $200 for first with original art
from the event Mutants In Hiding, half a box of X-Men packs, an uncut sheet
of DC and a Classic Insert. Second got half a box of X-Men, original art
from Vision's Optic Energy, an uncut sheet from an original starter deck
and a Classic Insert. Classic Inserts and X-Men packs also went to third
and fourth and X-Men packs went to fifth thru eighth.
Next weekend we will shuffle off to Buffalo! Stay tuned for a report!
