April 28
I played in two tournaments in Pittsburgh this weekend. Saturday's
was sanctioned and Sunday's was a non-sanctioned Homebase tournament. The
tournament's were held during the Pittsburgh Comic Con and there was a
24 hour gaming room open to all. Chad (MrSpaceGhost) was the host and I
must say that he did a fantastic job. Not only did both tournaments run
smoothly but everyone had fun. The 24 hour room was put to good use on
Friday night as Mike (The Anvil) Guillermin, Gary Martin, JR, Chad and
myself played until about 4 AM. (Chad, did you win any games?)
There were 22 players that showed up Saturday with many of them
playing in their first sanctioned tournaments. The Bertrands, Tyler, Derek
and Howard, came down from Canada. Josh Kozlowski, Mike and myself represented
Ohio and Gary, Shawn Thompson, Nathan Brown and Shawn (Sorry, Shawn! I
can't remember your last name!) came up from West Virginia. There were
many locale players, Brian Brinkley, Ben Brinkley and Walt and some of
the new players were Don and Tammie who each made it into single elimination
in their first tournaments! And of course, the infamous Twinz made their
presense known to all. Sorry to all that I have forgotten.
With 16 players in single elimination, it would take four rounds
to win it all. My only loss in swiss play came to Derek. His Four Freedoms
Plaza deck took me out fairly easy. He was the only undefeated after Howard
beat Tyler in round three of swiss. As it turned out, I won my first game
in single elim while Derek lost. I was not sad to see his deck leave the
tournament. The bad news was that I had to play Gary again. I had beaten
him in swiss and it can be hard to beat someone twice in one tournament.
But, it turns out that I almost owned Gary this weekend. We would play
twice in the Homebase tournament also, and we each one one. But this day,
I was able to pull out a comeback win after he ventured five in the second
hand. That left him with only one mission to complete but he never got
it. I won the next two hands and then managed to pull my team together
and squeeze out a win. Tyler lost his third round game to Brian in a way
that I'm still not sure what happened. The Anvil was my next opponent and
his time was up. It was now just myself and Brian Brinkley for it all.
Brian never won a mission and I won the tournament with a 7 and 1 record.
The Homebase tournament was something different. Terry Wright
and Chad insisted on playing a JLA Homebase and even had Howard Porter
draw up a JLA Watchtower. I tried to tell them that DC just can't compete
with Marvel but they just had to try to prove me wrong. I played Blue Area
Of The Moon and I liked the results. The deck is very powerful but short
on defense. I conceded a few hands for lack of defense but overall, it
was a good deck. I finished 5 and 1, losing to Gary in the semi-finals.
His Age Of Apocalypse deck just out drew me. I did manage to beat both
Terry and Chad before exiting the tournament. And as much as I hate to
admit it, Chad did make it to the finals with his JLA deck. Hats off to
Gary for not letting the Marvel decks down, as he won a very close game.
